I have already visited the World Trade Center in New York five times. The first was 20 years ago, when the scars and remains of the September 11 attacks were still visible.
Every time I returned, I witnessed something new taking shape — a city rebuilding its spaces, its memories, and its story.
But at the Memorial, my heart always feels heavy. I feel sadness, helplessness, and a deep sense of injustice when I think of the thousands of lives lost to fanaticism and dehumanization.
During this latest visit, I went to the top of One World Trade Center, the new tower. Looking down from there, I thought about one of the greatest lessons this place can teach us: We cannot change the past, but we can choose what we do with what it taught us.
Traveling the world has taught me to embrace different cultures, expand my horizons, and question the small beliefs that can keep us trapped.
May we become more human, more empathetic, and more willing to live with our differences.
When life becomes difficult, perhaps the question is not only “How will we get through this?” but: “Who will we choose to become afterward?”
September 11 deserves to be remembered. Always.
