Children exposed to family violence have the same brain activity patterns as soldiers who have experienced combat:
This finding comes from a study by researchers at UCL and the Anna Freud Centre.
Using functional MRI scans, scientists found that maltreated children showed heightened activity in the anterior insula and amygdala—regions of the brain associated with threat detection—when viewing angry faces.
These patterns mirror those seen in combat veterans, suggesting that both groups may develop hyper-awareness of danger as a survival mechanism.
However, this neural adaptation may come at a cost, as these areas of the brain are also linked to anxiety disorders, potentially explaining why abused children face an increased risk of anxiety later in life.
The study underscores the profound impact of early trauma on brain development. Lead researcher Dr. Eamon McCrory highlighted that while none of the children in the study had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, their altered brain functioning might serve as an early warning sign for future psychiatric issues.
The findings have significant implications for child welfare, emphasizing the need for interventions to protect children from violence.
By shedding light on the neural consequences of abuse, the research also offers new directions for developing treatment strategies aimed at mitigating long-term risks and fostering resilience.

This Massive Worm Lives in the Anatartic and Has a Terrible Bite:
In the icy depths of the Antarctic Ocean, scientists have uncovered a creature that looks like it belongs in a science fiction film — a massive, alien-like worm known as Eulagisca gigantea.
Growing over 20 cm (7 inches) long and up to 10 cm (4 inches) wide, this formidable species features an appendage that extends from its body to attack its prey. The worm uses sharp, tooth-like mouthparts to tear into its victims, making it one of the more fearsome predators in the deep sea.
Eulagisca gigantea is part of the Polynoidae family, a group of marine worms that are often recognized for their unique and sometimes bizarre appearances.
Found at depths between 1,700 and 2,200 feet, this giant worm has adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on the planet — Antarctica’s deep, cold waters. Its body is wide and segmented, with bristles covering each section, giving it a distinct and somewhat terrifying appearance.
Despite its fearsome look and formidable bite, the worm plays an important role in its ecosystem, feeding on smaller organisms that inhabit the ocean floor.
This remarkable discovery showcases the extreme biodiversity that exists in Earth's most remote and mysterious places. The deep waters of the Antarctic Ocean are home to countless species that have adapted to the harsh conditions of life at such depths.
As scientists continue to explore these unexplored regions, creatures like Eulagisca gigantea serve as a reminder of just how little we know about the oceans and the fascinating lifeforms that dwell there.
This newly documented species adds to the growing list of otherworldly creatures that thrive in the cold, dark corners of the planet, offering exciting insights into the wonders of marine biology.

First-Ever Discovery of an Animal That Doesn't Need Oxygen to Survive:
Research has upended the belief that all life needs oxygen to survive. Scientists discovered a jellyfish-like parasite that lives entirely without oxygen.
This tiny organism, Henneguya salminicola, has no mitochondrial genome, making it the first known multicellular organism to completely abandon oxygen as a source of energy.
Mitochondria, the powerhouse of most cells, use oxygen to create energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). However, this parasitic cnidarian, which lives inside salmon, has evolved differently. Instead of relying on oxygen, it has shed its mitochondrial genome, along with the machinery needed for respiration. How H. salminicola survives is still unclear, but it may be absorbing ATP directly from its host.
This discovery not only reshapes our understanding of life on Earth but could also influence the search for life beyond our planet. If complex life can survive without oxygen here, similar organisms could potentially exist in oxygen-free environments elsewhere in the universe. This breakthrough challenges assumptions and opens exciting possibilities for the study of life
