The term "sedan" for a type of car has an interesting etymology that traces back to its origins in the 17th century.

The word "sedan" comes from the French city of Sedan, located in the Ardennes region near the border of France and Belgium. In the late 17th century, Sedan was known for its production of a type of enclosed chair that was carried by two people, often with a canopy or hood. This chair was called a "chaise de Sedan" in French, meaning "chair from Sedan."

These Sedan chairs were a popular mode of transportation for people of importance or wealth, as they provided a comfortable and protected way to travel. They were enclosed to shield the passengers from the weather and dust of the streets.

In the late 19th century, as automobiles were being developed and various body styles were emerging, the term "sedan" was applied to a type of enclosed automobile with two rows of seats. The design was reminiscent of the enclosed Sedan chairs from Sedan, France. These early sedans were characterized by their enclosed body with two full-length seats, separate compartments for passengers and cargo, a fixed roof extending from the windshield to the rear window, and typically four doors (though some sedans had two doors).
