HALLOWEEN IS HERE!
Let's expand our vocabulary, shall we?
Check out this vocabulary list by Gabriela Garcia:

Halloween is on its way, so you may start seeing some unfamiliar words around. You may think “spoo-what?” but no worries, we’re here to help you understand these common Halloween Vocabulary and terms.

1. Werewolf:
A werewolf is a human that has the ability to transform into a wolf. This is a mythical figure, but a werewolf costume looks amazing and terrifying!

2. Spooky:
If you feel frightened, scared, and/or uneasy about something, then that thing is definitely spooky! This word might not be very commonly used throughout the year, but when it comes to Halloween, the spookier the better

3. Jack-O’-Lantern:
Pumpkin carving is a fun activity to do with friends; letting your imagination create the funniest or scariest faces on a pumpkin. But the best part of it all is seeing the result of your hard work displayed with a candle in it, lighting up the whole room! This is called a Jack-o-Lantern.

4. Goosebumps:
After you see something spooky, you might feel some weird sensations in your body, including goosebumps. This has nothing to do with a goose, but instead is when your skin feels tingly after the temperature changes suddenly or you feel a strong emotion!

5. Trick or Treat:
In countries where Halloween is celebrated, kids go from house to house dressed in costumes, collecting candy. This is known as “trick-or-treating”. You may wonder why it’s called that, and the story goes all the way back to the Middle Ages when children went door to door begging for food or money, and they would sing for them or say a prayer to pay them back on November 1st, the day of the dead.

6. Scarecrow:
Originally used to scare birds away from the crops in farms, scarecrows are now a typical Halloween decoration. They are made out of hay and old clothes and look like a man, so don’t get confused!

7. Candy Corn:
Candy Corn is a very typical Halloween candy in North America. They have this name thanks to the resemblance to real corn niblets and because of the corn syrup used to make them.

The Voight-Kampff Test was a test used as of 2019 by the LAPD's Blade Runners to assist in determining whether or not an individual was a replicant. The test measured bodily functions such as respiration, heart rate, blushing and pupillary dilation in response to emotionally provocative questions.

This test has inspired me to develop a set of PEER CONVERSATION CLASSES with thought-provoking questions for those who are tired of boredom and like to engage passionately with a debate topic.

Only humans, not androids, can respond emotionally to what they are asked. Similarly, not until speakers connect emotionally to the language can they be considered fluent.

The sessions will take place via Skype and participation is limited to 4 speakers on each of the following dates:

April, 2, 9, 16, 23 (Saturday) at 10am Brasilia time (GMT -3)

To exercise your fluency and enjoy the benefits of a well planned set of lessons and monitored peer chat, payment in advance of $50USD (PayPal) or 199 reais for those residing in Brazil.

This is a great opportunity to let your fluency prove itself. Don't miss it!

For further enquiries, or to book a place, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

BORING OR BORED?

Here is a very common mistake EFL speakers make: using the wrong form of an adjective. Let's take boring and bored as an example:

BORING
"He is boring" means he is not interesting; tedious.
Other examples
I've got a boring job in an office.✅
This task is so boring.✅
I hate romantic comedy movies. They are boring.✅

BORED
"He is bored" means he is feeling unhappy because something is not interesting.
Other examples:
It was a cold and wet day, the children were bored.✅
He was getting bored with/of doing the same thing every day.✅
I was so bored I dozed off through the second half of the movie.✅

GRAMMAR EXPLANATION
📌-ed adjectives
Adjectives that end in -ed generally describe EMOTIONS – they tell us how people feel.

I was so bored in that lesson, I almost fell asleep.🙄
He was surprised to see Helen after all those years.😮
She was really tired and went to bed early.🥵

📌-ing adjectives
Adjectives that end in -ing generally describe the thing that CAUSES the emotion – a boring lesson makes you feel bored.

Have you seen that film? It's really frightening.🎬
I could listen to her for hours. She's so interesting.👩‍🦰
I can't sleep! That noise is really annoying!📢

So, what do you think? Is the boy in the picture boring or bored? Answer in the comments.
