The Urban Health Network for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Urban Health Network for Latin America and the Caribbean We are a network of urban health researchers, practitioners, and policymakers - and home of SALURBAL.

The Urban Health Network for Latin America and the Caribbean works to:

-stimulate policy-relevant research on the state and drivers of health in cities of Latin American and the Caribbean
-disseminate information and findings to policy-makers and the public
-promote translation of existing knowledge into actions that improve health and reduce health inequities
-provide insights relevant to urban areas worldwide

As a regional learning network, we work to achieve these actions through the promotion of exchanges and collaborations across various groups focused on research, training, and translation to improve urban health in Latin America and the Caribbean. The network is convened by Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University in partnership with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the United Nations University: International Institute for Global Health, co-founders of the network.

🏞️🏙️ In 363 Latin American cities, 21 million people live at risk of river floods.

A new study from , led by Jinwen Xu - ITS Berkeley, analyzed these cities across 9 Latin American countries to understand how riverine flood hazard is distributed within cities in the region.

📊 About 7% of the 297.9 million residents analyzed live in flood-prone areas, in some cities, it's the majority. That risk isn't spread evenly, it's concentrated in just a few parts of the city.

📢 New Publication: Community Voices to Understand and Promote Liveability in the Green Corridor Urban Transformation Project in Bogotá, Colombia. Led by Lina María Gómez-García and published in BMC Public Health.

Before construction began on Bogotá's first Green Corridor (7th Street), our team captured a baseline of how residents experience their neighborhood, combining a household survey with the 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 citizen science method.

📊 66 citizen scientists captured 1,123 photo-narratives documenting daily life along the corridor.

🎯 Citizen-driven solutions included co-designing accessible sidewalks with people with disabilities, expanding street lighting, and educational campaigns on public space use.

🏙️ The findings were shared directly with city policymakers, and the research team was later invited to help redesign a segment of the corridor.
