Meet Sergio Gareca, a Finance major, Portfolio Manager for the Student Investment Group, and Student Director in the UNT Professional Leadership Program. “I chose Brown because it’s the only place where I could truly be all of myself: scientist, artist, and space enthusiast. The Open Curriculum lets me explore my passions in research, painting, and astronomy without limits. I’ve long been inspired by Jessica Meir, a Brown alum and NASA astronaut. Her path showed me that it’s possible to dream big and do it all, and Brown felt like the perfect launchpad.

This summer, working on cancer research at the Legorreta Cancer Center, I’ve felt more fulfilled than ever. It’s confirmed that I made the right choice. From the welcoming community to the incredible clubs I’m part of, like Brown Space Engineering, Ballroom Dance, and Art for Service, Brown has become my home in every sense.

Brown has shown me that I don’t have to choose just one path. I can truly do it all. As a biology concentrator with a passion for space, I never thought I’d find a place that encourages both. But through Brown’s Open Curriculum and its collaborations with NASA, I’ve started exploring space-related research while continuing my work in cancer biology. Being here has opened doors I didn’t even know existed, from working in a cancer lab at the Legorreta Cancer Center to connecting with opportunities in aerospace.

Being part of the International Mentoring Program (IMP) has been such an important part of my Brown journey. As a mentee, it gave me a sense of belonging from day one. I felt welcomed and understood by people who had been through the same transition. As the only Bolivian in my year, starting college so far from home was challenging at times, but IMP made it easier. Now, as I prepare to become a mentor myself, I’m excited to give that same support to new international students and help them feel just as at home as I do now!
