Highlands International School is a Pre-K through 12th grade international school in La Paz, Bolivia and a member of the Network of International Christian Schools, an organization with schools in various countries around the world. We are committed to providing a quality, English-language education to every student, which will prepare him or her for further study in the United States, or anywhere

Joshua Nicolas Thompson Valdivia

Reflecting on Highlands

Impactful Mentorship: Mr. Davis made the biggest impact on Joshua’s life, specifically regarding his faith. He showed Joshua that living a Christian life can be truly joyful and fun.

Life Lessons: Throughout his time at HIS, Joshua learned the value of discretion and the importance of staying out of trouble.

Favorite Memory: The adrenaline of winning the State Championship with the White Tigers stands out as his top highlight.

What He’ll Miss: Above all, Joshua will miss the deep and lasting relationships he built within the Highlands community.

Life at Highlands

Joshua was a powerhouse of activity during his high school years. He describes himself as outgoing and athletic, which was evident in his heavy involvement in:

Sports: Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball.

Leadership & Service: Student Council (STUCO) and Missions Trips.

Adventure: Takesi.

The Next Chapter

Joshua is headed to Houghton College in New York State! He plans to spend the next four years studying Economics or Business Administration, with the ultimate goal of pursuing a Master’s degree at a major university.

"I will take a gap year where I plan to travel or focus on growing my business. Then, I will go to university to study business."

"Enjoy your senior year! Don't just focus on grades, but pursue making good relationships with people around you, even if you are not close to them. Be open to think outside the box and do unexpected things."

Amy Mita Zambrana

We are so proud to celebrate Amy Mita Zambrana! As Amy prepares to graduate, she reflects on a journey of faith, resilience, and meaningful connection at Highlands International School.

Her Highlands Journey

Amy credits her teachers for shaping the person she is becoming. From learning about God’s unconditional love with Miss Adams and spiritual perseverance with Miss Stride, to understanding strength in weakness with Mr. Chavez and trusting a greater purpose with Mr. Davis, Amy has been guided by a dedicated community.

"The most valuable lesson I learned at Highlands is to always put God first in everything, trusting that He is present even in the moments when it feels hardest."

Memories to Last a Lifetime

Amy’s favorite memories range from the simple joy of laughing in Bible and Calculus classes to the energetic afternoons playing football at Casa Piedra. A standout moment was her trip to Rurrenabaque, where she spent sunsets sharing snacks with local children and feeling "completely free" while running with her best friends.

Whether she was on the volleyball court in middle school or representing the girls' soccer team in high school, Amy brought a spirit of positivity and hard work to everything she did.

Future Plans & Purpose

Known for her love of helping others (and her delicious baking!), Amy is ready to take her heart for service to the next level. She will be attending Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, to study Nursing. Her ultimate goal? To become a missionary nurse, traveling the world to provide care and support to those in need.

Words of Wisdom

Amy’s advice to her fellow students: "Enjoy the moments and the people around you because those memories last. Make the most of every opportunity, work hard, and trust that it will all be worth it."

Maria Jose Matos Jimenez

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

As she prepares to head to ESADE in Barcelona to study Business and Law, Maria Jose Matos Jimenez leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, and a deep love for the Highlands community.

Her Journey at HIS

Maria Jose has been an active part of the HIS family, serving in STUCO during her freshman and sophomore years, participating in the mission trip to Caranavi, and conquering the Takesi and Choro hikes.

Reflecting on her time here, her favorite memory takes her back to 6th grade:

"My favorite memory was the first time I won Team Day with the Red Team. After seven years of losing, everyone started crying and screaming—I never felt so close to my peers. I will miss the Red Team every day, and I know they got this!"

Mentors & Lessons

Maria Jose credits much of her growth to the teachers who stood by her:

Mrs. Ayala: "She has been my role model and my best friend... She made my love for books so strong. I will thank her every day for teaching me there is always something deeper and more meaningful in everything you do."

Mrs. Kriess: "I wouldn't be going to Barcelona if it wasn't for her. She always encouraged me to try and had faith in me since day one. Even at one of my lowest points, she was there for me to the end."

The Big Lesson: "Don’t let others define who you are. Whatever you think you can’t do, you can do it; never let others tell you otherwise."

To the Class of 2026 & Beyond

Maria Jose describes herself as someone loved by Jesus who strives to be kind while embracing her imperfections. Her advice to fellow students is powerful:

"Never lose yourself when you are having a hard time. You are capable of overcoming and becoming the best possible version of yourself. Show yourself you can do it!"

Maria describes herself as a creative person who finds joy in expressing herself through art and seeking out experiences that help her grow. Whether it was giving back during the Mission Trip or navigating the halls of HIS, Maria has made the most of her time here.

Favorite Memory: "My favorite memory in Highlands was the Mission Trip and helping children who do not have as much as I do with my friends."

🎓 Matías Ezequiel Ferreira Zurita

We are so proud to feature Matías Ezequiel Ferreira Zurita, a student who has truly grown up within the Highlands family. Matías describes himself as someone who might seem serious at first, but once you get to know him, you’ll find a kind, energetic soul who is always happy and ready to talk.

The Highlands Experience

For Matías, Highlands has been more than a school—it’s been his home.

A Teacher’s Impact: Matías credits Mr. Kreiss for being a true mentor. "He was more than just a teacher... he cared how I did outside of school and pushed me to be the best version of myself. He was there when I needed advice on school, sports, or anything."

The Power of Service: The biggest lesson Matías takes with him is the heart of a servant. "I learned that helping is never about getting something in return, but about changing other people's lives and building a better community."

Unforgettable Memories: His favorite memory takes us back to 10th grade in Takesi. Despite it being his first-ever hike and a massive challenge, the motivation from Mr. Davis and Mr. Kreiss—and the laughs (and tent-side debates!) with his friends—made it an experience he will never forget.

Future Horizons

Matías is heading into the future with big goals and a strong foundation. He plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Political Science, followed by a degree in Diplomacy. His mission? To put God first in everything, work hard, and find success.

To current and future graduates, Matías offers some practical and heartfelt advice:

"Never procrastinate. Manage your time, get things done as soon as possible, do everything with a great attitude, and try to be friends with everyone."
