Universiti Teknologi Brunei is an engineering and technology university in Brunei Darussalam that specializes in the niche areas of engineering, business and computing. UTB was established as a higher learning institution in 1986 that offered Higher National Diploma programmes in Engineering, Business and Computing. UTB’s ethos has always been based around the idea that effective instruction, hands-on approach and industry-based programmes equip students with fundamental knowledge, competence and marketable skills. This guiding principle has helped UTB produce graduates who are highly valued by local employers and readily accepted by universities in the UK, Australia and other countries where UTB students further their studies. UTB was upgraded to a university in 2008, and since then, tremendous development has taken place including the expansion of its academic programmes portfolio, establishment of strategic partnerships with industries and universities, embarking on the process of programmes accreditation by professional bodies, and intensification of research activities. Although UTB has moved towards offering undergraduate and graduate programmes starting from 2009, UTB continues to take pride in and maintain its successful hands-on approach in teaching and learning, and also the relevancy of its curricula to the needs of the industry.

24 September 2026 — Yang Mulia Mr Henry Bristol, Country Chair and Vice President, Shell Companies in Brunei Darussalam, paid a courtesy visit to Yang Mulia Associate Professor Pengiran Dr Mohamad Iskandar bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).

The engagement provided an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding relationship between UTB and Shell Companies in Brunei Darussalam, while exchanging views on matters of mutual interest and exploring avenues for future collaboration.

Discussions centred on strengthening industry-academia linkages, particularly in the areas of research and innovation, talent development, knowledge exchange and the creation of opportunities for students and researchers. The engagement also underscored the important role of strategic partnerships between higher education institutions and industry in supporting Brunei Darussalam’s national development priorities.

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Dr Mohammad Saiful bin Haji Omar, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (External and Industry Relations), and Yang Mulia Professor Hasnain Isa, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), UTB, as well as Mr Thomas Krasowski, NOV Shareholder Manager, Brunei Shell.

The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment towards cultivating meaningful industry-academia partnerships and advancing initiatives that contribute to research excellence, innovation, human capital development and sustainable national growth.

24 September 2026 — Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) held its Majlis Sambutan Maulid Nabi Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam for the year 1448H/2026M, bringing together staff, students, and invited guests in a meaningful observance of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a Selawat Tafrijiyyah led by Awang Muhammad Aiman Bin Jaidi, EXCO of Keugamaan & Kerohanian of the Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar for the 2026/2027 session.

The atmosphere was further enriched by a Tausyeh performance titled "Qomarun," presented by the Tausyeh Club and led by Awang Darwisiy Afiq Bin Jalani.

The highlight of the event was an insightful religious lecture titled "Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam Suluh Aqidah," delivered by Yang Mulia Ustaz Ahmad Muzhafar Bin Haji Marsidi, an officer from the Pusat Dakwah Islamiah. His address served as a reminder of the Prophet’s role as a teacher and guide—one who nurtured not only the intellect, but also the heart and character—and encouraged all present to emulate his exemplary character, Sunnah, and approach to seeking beneficial knowledge.

In recognition of his contribution, the Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dr. Mohamad Saiful Bin Haji Omar, Assistant Vice Chancellor for External Relations and Industry at UTB, presented a token of appreciation to the invited speaker. The ceremony concluded with a Doa Selamat led by Awang Muhammad Aiman Bin Zamriah.

This year’s celebration held particular significance as UTB marked its 40th anniversary, reflecting on four decades of excellence in education, research, and innovation—and reaffirming its commitment to nurturing future generations of leaders for Brunei Darussalam.

24 September 2026 — Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) celebrated the successful conclusion of the Building Intelligent Machines (BIM): AI Gauntlet Challenge 2026 with a Prize Award and Closing Ceremony held at the UTB Concourse, Block F.

The ceremony was attended by Yang Mulia Associate Professor Pengiran Dr Mohamad Iskandar bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Vice-Chancellor of UTB, and Yang Mulia Mr Henry Bristol, Country Chair and Vice President, Shell Companies in Brunei Darussalam.

The BIM: AI Gauntlet Challenge brought together UTB students to apply their knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills through a series of practical challenges involving artificial intelligence and intelligent systems. The competition provided participants with an opportunity to develop solutions, demonstrate teamwork and respond to challenges under pressure.

Six teams participated in the challenge, namely Project J.A.R.V.I.S., Triple T, Mantap, The Agents, ALGO-MECH17 and Phyto. The participants were recognised for their enthusiasm, teamwork, creativity, determination and problem-solving skills throughout the competition.

The ceremony commenced with a safety briefing, followed by the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat. Welcoming remarks were subsequently delivered by Yang Mulia Pengiran Muhammad Rahimi bin Pengiran Haji Zahari, Head of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AiML) Lab, UTB.

A competition highlights and video presentation provided an opportunity to revisit memorable moments from the challenge and showcase the efforts and achievements of the participating teams.

Certificates of participation were presented to all six teams by the Special Guest, Yang Mulia Mr Henry Bristol, in recognition of their participation and commitment to the challenge.

The ceremony also featured remarks from members of the judging panel, who highlighted the teams’ approaches to the challenges, their ability to respond under pressure, teamwork and development of their solutions.

23 September 2026 — His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, visited the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) exhibition during the 36th Brunei Darussalam Teachers’ Day Celebration 2026 held at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.

Also present was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.

20 September 2026 — Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) successfully concluded the ATU-Net Teacher’s Teaching Mobility Programme 2026, marking a significant milestone as the University’s first-ever inbound teaching mobility programme hosted under the ATU-Net network.

Held from 14 to 19 September 2026, the inaugural programme brought together 15 academics from 10 universities across Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines and Indonesia, transforming the UTB campus into a vibrant platform for cross-border teaching, academic exchange, professional dialogue and regional knowledge sharing.

The week-long programme featured a diverse range of guest lectures, teaching sessions and academic engagements, with visiting academics sharing innovative pedagogical approaches, disciplinary expertise and practical experiences with UTB students and academic staff. These engagements provided students with valuable exposure to diverse perspectives, contemporary teaching practices and regional academic experiences, enriching their learning beyond the conventional classroom environment.

The visiting academics also brought with them a wealth of knowledge and experiences from their respective institutions, fostering an environment where ideas transcended institutional and national boundaries. The exchange underscored the importance of collaborative learning, innovative pedagogy and international academic engagement in shaping a dynamic and future-ready higher education landscape.

Beyond teaching and classroom engagements, the programme featured strategic leadership engagements, academic discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions and professional networking opportunities. These engagements provided a meaningful platform for participating institutions to exchange insights on higher education development, explore emerging areas of mutual interest and identify opportunities for future collaboration in teaching, research, innovation and institutional engagement.

19 September 2026 — Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) strengthened its regional collaboration in environmental sustainability and green technology through its participation in the ASEAN-China Environmental Cooperation Forum 2026, held from 16 to 18 September 2026 in Nanning, Guangxi, China.

The Forum, themed “From Vision to Action: Co-Creating a Green Development Future,” brought together representatives from ASEAN and China to exchange knowledge and explore cooperation in green and low-carbon development, climate resilience, environmental governance and green technology.

A key outcome of UTB’s participation was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTB and the Guangxi Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (GRAES). Dr. Fadzliwati binti Mohiddin, Director of Corporate Communications Office (CCO), represented UTB at the signing.

The MoU provided a strategic platform for joint research, academic collaboration, capacity building and technology transfer, while opening opportunities for UTB researchers and academics to engage with environmental experts and institutions in China and the wider ASEAN region. The collaboration also strengthened UTB’s research network and created potential avenues for projects in green technology, low-carbon development, climate resilience and environmental innovation.

Further strengthening the partnership, Associate Professor Dr. Lim Tiong Hoo, Director of the Centre for Green Technology and Sustainability Research (GreenTeXS), UTB, was appointed as an Expert on the Steering Committee for Science and Technology Development of GRAES. The appointment provided an avenue for UTB expertise to contribute to scientific and technological development while deepening institutional cooperation.

During the Forum, Dr. Fadzliwati also delivered a presentation on “Development and Cooperation of ASEAN-China Green Technology Innovation,” highlighting Brunei Darussalam’s sustainability aspirations and UTB’s contributions through GreenTeXS, artificial intelligence, university partnerships and youth development.
