What is the "million word gap"?
A 2019 study found that children whose caregivers read them one book per day learned 290,000 more words than children who did not have any books read to them at all. Children whose caregivers read them five books per day learned 1.4 million more words!
Reading to your child each day has enormous benefits for their vocabulary and literacy skills. Books introduce new concepts to your child that wouldn't come up in everyday conversation. Your child may ask questions about the books, leading you to introduce even more vocabulary to your child with your answers.
The more words a child is exposed to, the more literacy skills that child has to help with reading at school age.
If you want to boost your child's language skills through reading, the best time to start is today! Set aside 20 minutes to read to your child each day (or night - it's a great addition to the bedtime routine).
