On Sunday, 21 January 2021, Peace English Club members of Hope Fountain School gathered in one of the classroom of that school in their habitual Sunday session. On the agenda were:
- Grammar points: tenses
- Topic: How does peace begins?
- Poem: How Peace Begins?
- Song “So Good to Be Home”
In the grammar points, participants explore English tenses. According to the facilitator, English verbs can be conjugated in three main tenses that are the past, the present and the future.
With the past, participants learned the following tenses: simple past, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. With the simple present, participants learned the following tenses: simple present, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. Participants learned also the future tense.
Examples with regular and irregular verbs “conciliate” and “build” (Yesterday, I conciliated my neighbours; A peacebuilder builds peace; I have been building; etc.) were used to help participants understand.
The topic was “How peace begins”. Participants worked into three groups A, B, C and presented their findings. According to the group A, peace begins in the family, the society, by living in harmony. The group B found that peace begins in the family and then spreads in the whole country. The group C found that peace begins in the neighborhood.
Then, the facilitator wrote the poem “How Peace Begins” by Haley Hale on the blackboard:
Peace begins by saying sorry.
Peace begins with not hurting others.
Peace begins with honesty and trust.
Peace begins with showing
Cooperation and respect.
World peace begins with me.
He then asks participants to make a reflection on the poem and ask the question “why peace begins by saying I am sorry”. After different answers, he concluded, “Everywhere human beings are problems between them cannot miss. Thus, the only way to maintain harmony within human beings is to say sorry when we hurt others and vice versa. Honest and trust are also very important for ones ‘peace. He added that it is very important we have peace in our hearts because when we have peace we reflect it and bring others to have peace.
Finally, participants revised the song “So Good to Be Home”

On January 7, 2021. PEC members of Hope Fountain School gathered at 3 pm for an interesting and rich agenda made by the following items:
- Grammar (types of verbs)
- Topic (Develop leadership skills)
- Song (Hero by Mariah Carey)
In the grammar, participants explored the types of verbs. It was a very interesting lesson as it helps participants from Form 9 to get an additional understanding of the passive voice. Then, they learned the three types of verbs that are:
• Action verbs: they include transitive verbs (eg. Hannah paints the kitchen walls) that have a definite object and intransitive verbs (eg. Hannah is painting right now) with no specific object.
• Stative verbs: they express a state rather than an action. They typically relate to thoughts, emotions, relationships, senses, states of being, and measurements. (eg. Philip seems happy; Mike disagrees with your analysis.)
• Auxiliary/modal verbs: Auxiliary verbs are also known as helping verbs and are used together with a main verb to show the verb’s tense or to form a question or negative (eg. I will go home after the session; Has Jenny spoken to the president of the committee? Etc.) ; and modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that are used to express abilities, possibilities, permissions, and obligations( eg. We can do something; You must not delay; etc.)
With the topic, participants discussed on the topic “Develop leadership skills”. The topic was taken from the book Learning Life's Lessons written by Dr William M. Timpson. The facilitator asked them first who is the reader? After various answer, he concluded with the following definition “A leader is someone who can see how things can be improved and who rallies people to move toward that better vision.
The facilitator gave his own example. “In his quarter, there was a street damaged by the rain. That street has become impracticable and people who attempted to pass slipped and fell into mud. Cars slipped, too. Then, he decided to organize his community and they rehabilitated it.” He shows many pictures of the action. Participants were interested and took the pledge to be leaders in their families and community.
As the song is concerned, the facilitator taught participants “Hero” by Mariah Carey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvNDFzn-Ck4; a song that taught hope, resilience, perseverance and courage. He explained that the leader in his action often encounters obstacles and barriers. Things may not go as planned. They have to know that they have a “hero” that lies in them.

On 11 November 2020; the HFS’ Peace English Club took place at 5:00 PM. Sixteen members attended the club. The following items were on the agenda:
- The weather
- Topic: Add missing voices to build peace
- Song: Man in the Mirror
Students learned words and expressions related to the weather such as it’s hot, it’s cold, windy, sunny, cloudy; lightning, hail, rain, fog, thunder, storm, cloud, snow, etc.
The topic for discussion was taken from the book Learning Life’s Lessons by William M. Timpson: “Add missing voices”. The facilitator engaged participants in a conversation. He asked, “Do you know parents who prefer some children to others, or have you experienced yourselves this situation? What happens when in the family parents love/prefer some children to others? What happens to those other children?” Participants answered, “They feel frustrated and ignored”. What are the consequences to those children?” They can develop an unexpected and unwanted behavior.” “They can decide to do nothing and the family will miss they contribution.” “They can also revolt and quit the family.”
“This is what happens when in the community, society or country some people or category of people are ignored, dismissed or oppressed by others (those who have the power)”, said the facilitator. “Not only the community, society or the country will go to miss their contribution in building the country but also they can revolt and put the country into a war”, he added. “You can understand that in this case, even those who felt in peace before will going to lose that peace”. "And, what happens when there is war?', the facilitator asked. “People die.” “People flee” “No food.” “Schools are destroyed.” “Children lose their parents, sisters and brothers, cousins, uncles, aunts, …” Participants answered. Then, you understand that building peace involves ALL the members of a community, society, or country.
“So, what will you do when you will finish your studies and become decision-makers?” “We will involve everybody.
After the discussion, participants learned the song “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. A song that calls people to care for those in need.

1 October,2020 Peace English Club of Hope Fountain School was held at 3 pm. Twenty-four members attended. The agenda items were:
- Numbers
- Listening comprehension
- Topic: “Pause for reflection”
- Games and songs
As numbers are concerned, participants learned cardinal and ordinal numbers, from one to one hundred. After mastering those numbers, they were able to read any cardinal number and give its corresponding ordinal number as seen in the exercise they did after.
In listening comprehension, they listened to a video conversation of native speakers and were asked to write down words and phrases they caught that they shared afterward.
The topic was “Pause for reflection” from the book Learning Life’s Lessons by William M. Timpson. The facilitator read an excerpt from the book. Always with the aim of improving the listening skills, the facilitator asked them to copy now down sentences they got and share them.
Then, he explained how important is to pause and reflect. Pausing is to give another the opportunity to express himself, it is also to give yourself an opportunity to listen to the other. How many conflicts and misunderstandings occur between people because they do not take time to pause and listen to the other? Many. How many conflicts and misunderstandings have people been able to resolve because they took the time to keep quiet and listen to others? Many.
The facilitator asked then the participants the barriers that prevent people to reflect. They answered television, smartphones, alcohol, betting on football games, etc. Then, the facilitator asked, “What happens when people do not take time and reflect?” “It is difficult to find GOOD solutions to problems that really matter.”
Then, as Professor Timpson states, "when problems surface in class or in community when things don’t go as well as planned, when your confidence is shaken, take some time to yourself to reflect honestly on events and your own reactions. You might find the inspiration for a new and creative insight during the time that these conflicts incubate in your mind and heart". Learning Life’s Lessons by William M. Timpson, 2019
The game was “Simon says” and with the song, participants learnt the song “So Good to Be Home” from the film Let It Shine. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEG5YdjVIMQ)

With the topic that was “Positive Peace and Negative Peace”, confusing at the first time, but after some explanations by the facilitator, the topic becomes clear. Then, participants enumerated a number of elements that show that in a community/country there is a negative peace. For a participant, negative peace is when there is a conflict or misunderstanding between a mother and a father in the family. For another participant there is a negative peace when some people intimidate others because they don’t share the same political party or when students don’t have enough food to eat after their classes. For another one, negative peace is when OBR (National Revenue office) hardly penalizes you when he caught you violating tax law. For others, negative peace refers to injustice, lack of freedom, corruption, etc.
