Baby Signing with Lavina,

I ran my first baby signing class 7 years ago. It was a 3 weeks instead of 4 weeks. I think all the wee ones were under 1 year. This is what they accomplished in 3 weeks ! Babies are so clever 😊

Grant (first sign: milk)

For babies (6 months to 3+ years) and their caregivers. We sign, sing, eat, dance, and play. 4 classes per series. The fee is 25 BD per series; all caregivers are welcome to attend (parents, nannies, etc). Handouts provided to help the grown-ups remember 😉

Series 1 (The Essentials) covers the basics for early communication:
Class 1: Eat & Drink;
Class 2 - More, Diaper, Hurt;
Class 3 - Pets;
Class 4 - Family

"We had our third class yesterday and we had Cristian signing water at home and eat during class ... Rayan asking for milk at home at 6:30 instead of waiting for her usual 7:00pm feed (granny could not believe it ! and daddy was very impressed with Rayan signing for more). And big girl Halah at 13 months signing cereal, sleep, hurt and cucumber :-) "

I am not the only one 😊

"It only started as an experiment, and for a while, I wasn't really convinced that it would work. But it turned into something so much more than I imagined. I had always been really interested in sign language, and when my daughter was born, I started researching about baby signing. I had been lazily and jokingly signing to her every now and then, till one day when I clearly wasn't giving her milk quick enough, she put her chubby little fist in the air and triumphantly signed 'milk.' It was one of the cutest and most amazing things I had ever seen. She was so certain and calm in what she was doing, and only seven months old. From then, on she signed milk very regularly, and quickly took up other signs too! I just loved it and I was so excited with the idea of it that I told all my friends, and their friends, and I even went on to study Irish Sign Language for two years. I got quite good at it, so I ended up having signing classes at home for babies between 6-18 months and their mothers. I put all my soul into this project, and now we have a book and an app for mothers and their babies. Babies really have a lot to say, and they want to be understood much, much earlier than when they actually start talking! Signing gave me this incredible insight into my baby's mind, and I feel it gave us such a wonderful connection too.”

Sign language is also a language and can serve as a kinesthetic bridge between two languages, that is one sign or symbol for two different sounds that mean the same thing. I have observed that signing seems to facilitate verbal communication for bilingual children compared with their non-signing peers. Please note that this is anecdotal and not evidence-based fact.

The Baby Signing classes are offered to babies (6 months to 3+ years) and their caregivers. Classes are a combination of signing, singing and practice activities... and a lot of fun ! Classes are offered as a group of 4 classes per series. The fee is 25 BD for each series (4 classes); all caregivers are welcome to attend (parents, nannies, etc)

Subsequent series cover more complex concepts and words that are a part of your babies every day routine and social interactions.

Series 2: Clothing & Play; Transport; Nice Words; Bedtime

Series 3: Day & Night; Weather Outside; Nature; Stop and Go

Series 4: Friends & Feelings; Opposites; Fruits &Veggies; Toys & Games

These classes can be offered at my studio or at your home. The advantages of hosting signing classes at your home are that
- you don't have to travel far
- your babies will get used to signing in their home and in their friends' homes and the vocabulary can be personalized
- you will have a nearby group of families to sign with.

I am a mother, a brain scientist, yoga therapist, doula and baby signing enthusiast. Baby signing is an age-appropriate tool that uses motor skills that babies are exploring and mastering. This kinesthetic learning lays the foundation of language basics for later verbal communication.

Baby Signing will be relocating ... to Ireland in June !

It has been a privilege to share baby signing with you and your family. I have loved to watch your babies master their signs and in doing so watch their confidence and self-esteem grow as they clearly communicate their needs. I enjoyed observing the your relationship and bonding with your baby blossom as the frustrations and tantrums melt away. I have been left speechless (and signless) to witness the how quickly your clever little ones have progressed.

Babies as young as 6 months were shown to understand a fair number of words but usually start to speak a handful of words by the 12 months. But there is a whole lot going on in there in the meantime. Would it not be lovely to know what your baby wants:
to eat not drink ?
more or all done ?
crying because they are hurt or they want their mama ?
