From Deckhand to OOW 3000GT: A Streamlined Path in Just Over Two Years

In my 17 years of maritime experience, I’ve come to understand the immense value of timely and accurate information. Reflecting on my own career progression, it’s clear that the right guidance at the right time could have saved me both time and effort. If I knew then what I know now, my path to becoming an Officer of the Watch (OOW) 3000GT could have been significantly faster and more efficient.

For those just starting out, particularly under the Maltese maritime framework, the route to OOW 3000GT is more accessible than many realize. With the right strategy, you could move from a Deckhand to OOW 3000GT in just over two years. Here’s how:

Step 1: Obtain a Yachtmaster Offshore Certification
The first step toward becoming an OOW 3000GT is acquiring a Yachtmaster Offshore certification from a recognized institution such as the International Yacht Training (IYT), Royal Yachting Association (RYA), or Transport Malta. This qualification lays the groundwork for the OOW 3000GT and is a requirement for entry into the certification process.
To expedite this, I would recommend accruing sea miles as quickly as possible. One effective way to do this is by participating in yacht deliveries or transatlantic crossings, where you can gain the necessary experience and sea time. Once you’ve logged the required sea miles and completed the relevant training, you’ll be ready to earn your Yachtmaster Offshore certification.

Step 2: Enrol in the OOW 3000GT Course
After securing your Yachtmaster Offshore certification, the next step is to immediately enrol in an OOW 3000GT training program. These course cover critical areas such as navigation, radar, ship stability, meteorology, and GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). By completing this course swiftly, you’ll be well on your way to obtaining your OOW 3000GT certification.

Step 3: Complete 12 Months of Approved Sea Service
One of the most advantageous aspects of the Maltese OOW 3000GT certification process is the option to complete just 12 months of approved seagoing service as part of an approved cadet training program, rather than the standard 36 months of sea time required for non-cadet routes. This allows for a significantly shorter path to qualification.
During this period, it’s crucial to log your sea time meticulously and follow the guidelines outlined in an approved Training Record Book (TRB). You will need to gain practical experience in watchkeeping, navigation, and other duties expected of a deck officer. As a Deckhand, you can work on vessels over 15 meters in length or 80GT, which meet the criteria for your sea time, while following the structured cadet program.
By completing 12 months of dedicated sea service and ensuring your TRB is kept up-to-date and verified by senior officers, you’ll be eligible to apply for your OOW 3000GT certificate.

HOW PREPARED YOU FEEL TO HANDLE AN EMERGENCY ON BOARD YOUR YACHT TODAY?
There is no doubt that practicing emergency drills is crucial for safety on board, but how often we really do it and when do it what is the crew attitude towards the training.
When comes to commercial yachts all is quite clear and regulated, however private yachts crew from my personal experience are not less prepared and trained. In the end all come to the point, how serious the crew is feeling about these exercises and how much aware are they of the possibilities of emergency situation. There are people with successful lifelong career at sea without having to participate in real emergency situation, while for others it may happen on their very first contract. The difference in our reaction in a real emergency will come mostly from this how familiar we are with the use of the safety equipment on board and our duties in case of emergency.
I have to admit that my attitude towards the emergency trainings change dramatically throughout the years. As a Deckhand I considered these exercises as a complete loss of time while as a Captain I took the things deadly serious.

From your personal experience what can be done to improve the safety culture on board?

WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY SO MANY ‘’USELESS’’ THINGS IN OUR YACHTMASTER COURSE?
While is crystal clear for all students why do we need to study COLREGS and Meteorology, for some is a wonder why do we need to do this chart works since we all use ECDIS now. Tides calculation that requires graphics, books and time for calculations that can be done in a second with various applications or can be just checked in internet. In addition, since we never going to use this knowledge in our practice at sea most of it will be forgotten in an year or less.
The answer for this is simple- using only ECDIS for position awareness means that you using single method for position fixing at all times which is a big NO in the navigation. GPS signal can be lost or give an error especially close to shore which could lead to dangerous situations. The chart work study will teach you different methods of position fixing and how to compare them, what is parallel index ( PA ) how and where to use it, what is the difference between course over ground and compass course, what errors have the magnetic compass and the gyro compass and how to calculate them, how to read different symbols on the chart and much more.
As for the tides calculations, except for the numerical value of the tides, the physics of the process is equally if not more important. I have personally witnessed small boats trying to enter a port during strong ebbing tide and sitting on one place or even going astern due to 4 knots current going against them. The study of the tides make us competent sailors able to read nautical publications and understand abbreviations as LAT (lowest astronomical tide) or Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). We will learn that distances measured under bridges are always taken during the highest astronomical tide (HAT), what is spring and neap tide and many other useful facts about the tides phenomenon.
The Yachtmaster certification is recognized worldwide and demands a high level of competence. To be considered a professional, you need to demonstrate a broad understanding of all aspects of navigation, not just those that are automated. Being able to manually perform these tasks builds your confidence as a Skipper. Knowing you can navigate effectively without technology if needed sets you apart as a truly competent sailor.
In summary, while it might feel like some parts of your course are outdated or irrelevant, they play a critical role in ensuring you are a well-rounded and capable sailor, able to handle any situation that arises at sea.
