Applications for Irish students are now OPEN for October 2026 entry for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy at Medical University Varna in Bulgaria 🇮🇪🇧🇬
Get in touch and we'll get your online application sorted and have you prepped to get a top score in the entrance exam. All entrance exams are done online meaning you can do it from the comfort of your home in Ireland. If you're doing your Leaving Cert this year I'd recommend doing the exam in July. Obviously before June you're busy and in September you'll also be busy sorting your documents to apply to Bulgaria.

I started studying medicine in Bulgaria at 37 years of age. For me, this was the perfect time because I got my rock n' roll ambitions in Korea done and dusted in my 20's and early 30's. I would've had major regrets if I didn't give it a go. Likewise, I would've had major regrets if I didn't give medicine a go. In hindsight, as a 5th year medical student, I'm really glad I made both decisions but life certainly has not been without its difficulties. However, it's been fun as hell 🤘⚕️

Winter's sticking around for a while....

I left a a career in music / TV / teaching in South Korea to start medicine at 37. Of course, there are Mondays at 8am in infectious diseases seminars where I'm truly questioning my sanity. But I would definitely do it all again if given the opportunity to decide because it will all be worth it in the end.

I'm often asked if it's necessary to speak Bulgarian when studying medicine in Bulgaria. I have two answers to this question! Technically, it's not necessary as the full course is in English. But I highly recommend learning a conversational level of Bulgarian to speak with patients at the hospital. If my old 41 year old brain can do it then so can you!
Често ме питат дали е необходимо да се говори български, когато се учи медицина в България. Имам два отговора на този въпрос! Официално, не е необходимо, тъй като пълният курс е на английски. Но силно препоръчвам да научите разговорно ниво на български, за да говорите с пациенти в болницата. Щом моят стар 41-годишен мозък може да го направи, значи и вие можете!

This is one of the most common questions that I get on social media from Irish students: Can I get a job in a hospital in Ireland after graduating from a Bulgarian medical university. The answer is, of course, yes! There are many non-training SHO posts available in Ireland where you can get valuable experience before applying for training posts with the HSE. In order to do this you need to register with the Irish Medical Council. You don’t need to do ANY extra exams to do this because Bulgarian medical degrees are EU Certified.

This is our fifth Christmas in Bulgaria. It's always a tricky time because the exams come up so quickly after New Years. We stay in Varna to avoid the stress of travelling to Ireland and because, let's face it, I wouldn't do a tap of study if I was back home partying with friends and family! But we always have a really nice Christmas here. I take plenty of breaks so that we can enjoy lot's of time together and we actually enjoy the more laid back version of Christmas in Bulgaria. 🎄🎅🇮🇪🇧🇬
