Public Environmental Center for Sustainable Development! 🌱

Digital Twins of the Ocean. 🌊📱

📲 I See Sea

HARBOR SAFETY – VARNA PORT PILOT was presented by Prof. Todor Ganchev at the Iliad General Assembly 2023 in Barcelona, Spain.
The pilot aims to improve the safety of operations in the Varna Port Complex and increase the number of days the Varna Port remains open or partially open, i.e. some of its terminals remain open even though others are closed due to high risks, even during unfavorable weather conditions (fog, winds, etc.).
The ILIAD DT of Varna Bay and the derivative prototype applications will contribute to the sustainable development of the local Blue economy -reduced ecological footprint of ships, improved competitiveness of the regional industry, improved engagement and empowerment of citizens.

On 01.12.2023, the Maritime Traffic Management Center - Varna hosted a working meeting of the teams from Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPIC) and the Technical University - Varna (TU-Varna) partnering in the realization of the Bulgarian part of the international project ILIAD.
During the workshop, progress was presented on the technological prototypes developed at TU-Varna to receive feedback from end users, including maritime traffic controllers, ship captains, tugboats, and pilot boats. At the next stage, the operability of the prototype technologies using the modern achievements of artificial intelligence will be evaluated by BPIC and other end users of these technologies.
During the meeting, Dr. Milen Todorov - Director of the Specialized Division of the Directorate "Management of Ship Traffic - Black Sea", BPIC presented the attendees and the role of the individual participants in the implementation of the project. Prof. Todor Ganchev reported the current progress of the ILIAD project, and Captain Andrey Stanev demonstrated the capabilities of the augmented reality application for blind navigation in limited visibility, which is an important part of the "Varna Port Pilot" demonstrator.
Eng. Neli Zarkova from TU-Varna presented the functionalities of the ICC application, which is an important part of the development of citizen science (Citizen Science), whose main goal is to direct the attention of society and citizens to environmental problems and help to solve them. The ICC application is available at https://iliad.tu-varna.bg/ and allows citizens to actively participate in the protection of the marine ecosystem.
The attendees expressed satisfaction with the progress reported and the results achieved, and during the discussions expressed recommendations and directions for future improvements. In 2024, end users of these applications will evaluate their usefulness and reliability in operational conditions and real work environments.
