Two Bulgarian women at the market in Thessaloniki – a beautiful photograph from the late 19th century.
📜 "June 24. Early in the morning at 6 o’clock, I left Thessaloniki and set off for Voden with four postal horses. Near Vardar Gate, we encountered a whole crowd of peasant women in Bulgarian attire, bringing food to the city for sale. West of Thessaloniki, the Greek language is no longer heard, and Bulgarians inhabit the region from here to the Albanian border mountains," wrote Professor August Grisebach from the University of Göttingen in his travel diary in 1839 during his scientific expedition to the East.
👉 A testimony from a world-renowned scholar and traveler from 1839, along with a colorized photograph by me and another one in the first comment—so much Bulgarian history from Thessaloniki and Macedonia.
