✨ THE JOURNEY OF EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT — I AM 4 ✨
Today we continue the journey at age 4.
At 4, children are becoming more confident in expressing what they think, want and feel.
They may understand more about rules, friendships and other people’s feelings — but understanding something and being able to manage it in the moment are still very different things.
So we may see:
Big reactions to losing or waiting.
Difficulty when plans change.
Strong feelings about fairness.
Upset around friendships.
A growing need for independence.
At this age, children are building empathy, impulse control and emotional regulation, but these skills can disappear quickly when they are tired, hungry, excited or overwhelmed.
In I AM 4, we look at what you might notice, what’s happening developmentally and how adults can support children as they begin to understand themselves and the people around them.
And throughout this series, remember: age gives us a useful lens, not a rigid deadline. Children develop at different rates, and temperament, experiences and environment can all shape the journey.
