A new penguin species has been discovered for the first time in more than 100 years! 🐧
Genetic research has revealed that gentoo penguins are actually four distinct species, including a previously unrecognized species found on the remote Kerguelen Islands in the Southern Ocean.
The discovery is a remarkable reminder of how much we still have to learn about life in some of the planet’s most isolated places. But it also comes with an important conservation warning.
Researchers project that under a moderate climate change scenario, some of the newly recognized sub-Antarctic gentoo species could lose suitable habitat across the islands where they currently live by 2050, with few nearby places for them to go.
