It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor William J. (“Bill”) Tilstone, Past President of the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS), an outstanding forensic scientist, visionary leader, and one of the great international ambassadors of our discipline.
Professor Tilstone dedicated his professional life to the advancement of forensic science, combining scientific excellence with an unwavering commitment to international cooperation. As Director of the South Australia Forensic Science Division, he played a pivotal role in strengthening forensic services and promoting innovation within the field. His greatest international legacy came through his leadership of the 12th Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, held in Adelaide in 1990, where he served as IAFS President. The remarkable success of that meeting, attended by almost 1000 delegates from around the world, demonstrated the truly global character of forensic science and marked a milestone in the history of the Association. Bill Tilstone believed that forensic science transcends borders. Throughout his career, he championed the exchange of knowledge, fostered friendships across continents, and inspired generations of forensic scientists through his integrity, generosity, and dedication to education and scientific excellence. His contribution extended well beyond his own discipline, helping to shape an international community founded on collaboration, mutual respect, and the shared pursuit of truth and justice.
Those of us who had the privilege of knowing him will remember not only his professional achievements but also his warmth, kindness, humility, and unwavering support for colleagues from every part of the world. His legacy lives on in the institutions he strengthened, the international partnerships he helped build, and the countless professionals whose careers he influenced.
On behalf of the international forensic science community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the honour of working alongside him.
Professor Bill Tilstone leaves behind an enduring legacy. His life reminds us that science advances not only through discovery, but also through leadership, generosity, and a steadfast commitment to serving justice and humanity.
