American College of Sofia Welcome to the official page of the American College of Sofia! These missionaries, led by Dr. James F.

Founded in 1860, ACS integrates the values and best practices of American pedagogy with the rich educational traditions of Bulgaria and Europe. The College provides a rigorous high school education, in English, to approximately 900 boys and girls in grades eight through twelve. Of these, 97% are Bulgarian with about 25 international students who also meet the entrance requirements of ACS. The very

specific purpose of ACS is to prepare talented students to be successful in the best universities in the world, and ultimately to be leaders in Bulgaria. The American College of Sofia is one of the oldest American educational institutions outside the United States. It traces its roots directly to a school for boys opened in Philipopolis by American missionaries for the 1860-61 school year. Clarke, opened a school for girls at Eski Zagra three years later and those two schools grew into the American College. Aside from a compelling mission and a unique history, the College takes pride in the success of its graduates. Many factors account for the success of our graduates. Every year only the 160 seventh graders who have the highest scores on the admissions test are admitted and approximately 50% of our families qualify for financial aid. The eighth grade year is devoted to mastery of the English language and students graduate with both an American and Bulgarian high school diploma. Standards for academic achievement are very high, but the school's Bulgarian and international faculty are dedicated to helping students be successful. In addition, nearly all students develop other talents in activities such as fine arts, athletics, journalism, and many clubs. All of this takes place on a 50 acre campus with classic college buildings, including a dormitory that can accommodate 28 students, performance auditorium, gym, sports fields, a tennis court, library, computer labs, up-to-date classrooms, and many other spaces that enhance the learning environment. „Всяко събитие, възприемано като голяма трудност, е просто момент, в който е нужно да преосмислим посоката си. Въпросът не е в това какво са постигнали нашите възпитаници, а в пътя, по който са решили да вървят.“ - Емили Сарджънт-Бийзли, президент на Американския колеж в София.

Историята на Зорница Стоянова, Випуск 2001, възпитаничка на колежа, потвърждава това. На сцената, по време на извънкласните артистични дейности, тя открива своята страст и пътя си напред.

„Тези извънкласни занимания ме спасиха от депресия и чувство на апатия и ми дадоха смисъл и възможност да бъда себе си. Не мисля, че щях да открия любовта си към изкуството в някое друго училище.“

Тя си спомня за академичните трудности и притеснението на учителите ѝ, поради по-ниския ѝ успех, и как въпреки това с времето намира вътрешната си сила и умение да се изправя пред трудностите пред нея.

Нейният съвет към читателите е:

„Бъдете себе си. Правете това, което правите, защото не можете да живеете без него. Правете го, защото го обичате. Правете го, без значение дали то ви носи пари, слава или богатство.“

The story of Zornitsa Stoyanova, Class 2001, can attest to that. On stage, during extracurricular activities is when she found her passion and her way forward.

"These after-school activities saved me from depression and apathy and gave me a way to be. I don't think I would have discovered my passion in any other school."

She recalls that she was always on the edge of academic probation and teachers were being very worried for her but she learnt to get up faster every time she went down.

Her advice to readers is: "You do you. Do it because you can not live without it. Do it because you love it. Do it no matter if there is money, fame or fortune."

По-рано тази година нашите ученици имаха възможността да се срещнат с д-р Петко Динев, български учен с принос към мисиите „Артемида" на НАСА. Колежаните споделиха своите мечти и въпроси, а той им даде ценни съвети възоснова на своя професионален и житейски опит.

Подобни срещи ни напомнят, че големите открития започват с любознателност и че бъдещето на науката и изследванията се ражда в класните стаи, лабораториите и смелите млади умове.

Earlier this year, our students had the opportunity to meet Dr. Petko Dinev, a Bulgarian scientist whose work has contributed to NASA's Artemis missions. As students shared their aspirations and questions, Dr. Dinev offered insights from a career dedicated to innovation, discovery, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Moments like these remind us that big dreams often begin with curiosity, and that the future of exploration starts in classrooms, laboratories, and young minds willing to ask "What if?"

Ами ако една библиотека можеше да разкаже собствената си история?
Пътят към дома: Рилската колекция на Американския колеж в София.

Рилската колекция включва около 2100 книги, които някога са принадлежали на колежа. След затварянето му през 1947 г. тези книги изчезват, за да бъдат преоткрити десетилетия по-късно в Рилския манастир, все още носещи печатите на Американските училища в София и Самоковските девически и мъжки училища, предшествениците на съвременния колеж в София.

Тяхното забележително преоткриване започва съвсем случайно, благодарение на родител на един от нашите чуждестранни ученици. След две години кореспонденция с канцеларията на Негово Светейшество Патриарха на Българската православна църква, книгите най-накрая се завръщат в колежа.

Според книгата „Американският колеж в София“ на тогавашния президент на колежа Флойд Бляк, библиотеката на колежа някога е била най-голямата колекция от англоезична литература на Балканския полуостров, като в архивите се споменават приблизително 12 000 дарени тома.

What if a library could tell its own story?
The Journey Home: The Rila Collection of ACS.

The Rila Collection includes around 2,100 books that once belonged to the American College of Sofia. After the college was closed in 1947, these books disappeared, only to be rediscovered decades later at Rila Monastery, still bearing the stamps of Sofia American Schools and Samokov Schools for Boys/Girls, which preceded the modern American College of Sofia.

Their remarkable rediscovery began with a chance observation by the parent of one of our international students. After two years of correspondence with the Office of His Holiness the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the books finally made their journey home.

According to then - ACS President Floyd Black's The American College of Sofia, the college library was once the largest collection of English-language books on the Balkan Peninsula, with records mentioning approximately 12,000 donated volumes.

We share with you a glimpse of this extraordinary collection - an amazing heritage for the College, as well as Bulgaria and the United States.

Винаги е страхотно да посрещнем нашите завършили колежани обратно при нас!

На 24-ти юли колежът посрещна випуски 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 и 2021. Въпреки хладното време, нашите сърца се стоплиха от това, че отново бяхме заедно.

On July 24 we welcomed Classes 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021 for their reunion and even though the weather was a bit cold, it always warms our hearts to be together again!
