IOM Bulgaria visits IOM Spain to exchange experiences on voluntary return and reintegration. 🛬

Representatives of IOM Bulgaria’s Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) team, led by head of the mission Mr. Stamenkov, visited IOM Spain to exchange experiences and learn from Spain’s practices in voluntary return and reintegration.

The visit included meetings with Spanish authorities responsible for migration management, providing an opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges and learn from each other’s work.

The knowledge gained will help IOM Bulgaria further strengthen its support for migrants who wish to return to their countries of origin, ensuring that they can access assistance throughout the process and return in a safe and dignified manner.

🇬🇧 Learning the language opens doors.

Feeling at home begins with the ability to communicate – to build connections, find employment and take an active part in community life. That is why IOM Bulgaria's free Bulgarian language courses are among our most in-demand services, with interest continuing to grow.

This week, a new in-person A1 Bulgarian language group started at 105 Atanas Dalchev Secondary School in Sofia. For those who prefer to learn remotely, IOM Bulgaria also offers online classes accessible to participants across the country.

📊 Since the start of the programme, 1,676 participants have successfully completed at least one level of Bulgarian language training. Since May 2025, a total of 110 learning groups have been organised.

Feedback from participants is equally encouraging: 97.5% of those surveyed rated the contribution of Bulgarian language training to their integration very positively.

The courses are offered in person in Sofia, Burgas and Plovdiv, as well as online for participants across Bulgaria.

For EN scroll down👇

🪁 On Saturday, 10 October, children and parents from the local community and migrant families came together for a workshop dedicated to Afghan kites, organised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bulgaria in partnership with Multi Kulti Collective.

The event began with an introduction by Sara Faizi, originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, who shared insights into the cultural significance of kite flying in Afghanistan and its place in childhood games and traditions. Participants also learned about the specific materials and techniques used to make Afghan kites. Some of the materials proved particularly difficult to find, and some had to be sourced from abroad.

Following a hands-on demonstration, parents and children teamed up to make their own kites. While parents focused on the seemingly simple but surprisingly challenging mechanics of the construction, children took an active role in decorating their creations, bringing plenty of colour and imagination to the workshop.

The morning was filled with creativity, curiosity and laughter. Some participants even took their kites outside to test them, putting their newly acquired skills into practice.

We would like to thank **Krasno Selo Municipal Cultural Institute (Общински културен институт „Красно село“) ** for its support and for providing a welcoming space for this community gathering.

By bringing together people from different backgrounds through shared activities and cultural exchange, events like this create opportunities for mutual understanding and help strengthen connections within the community.

🇪🇺 The event was organised within the framework of the project “Increasing the Awareness and Tolerance of the Society and Integration Support”, funded by the National Programme of Bulgaria under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021–2027, with the financial support of the European Union and the budget of the Republic of Bulgaria.

🌌 Yesterday in Sofia, the first of three photography exhibitions dedicated to migration, organised by IOM Bulgaria, opened to the public.

📷 "No Man’s Woodland" by documentary photographer Michaela Vatcheva tells the story of Ala’a Hadid, who arrived in Bulgaria from Syria as an unaccompanied refugee child, and Lily and Mladen Nedyalkovi – one of the first families in Bulgaria to become foster parents to unaccompanied refugee children.

“No Man’s Woodland does not seek the big moment of rescue, but the life that is built afterwards – of a child searching for a place to call his own, and of a family that decides to make room for him in their home,” says Michaela Vatcheva.

Through her photographs, she brings us closer to Ala’a’s everyday life, his journey into adulthood and the bond he has built with his foster family. It is a story about finding a home and people with whom to move forward.

The exhibition was realised as part of the activities under IOM Bulgaria’s project “Increasing the Awareness and Tolerance of the Society and Integration Support”.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening! ❤️

🤝Special thanks to Children’s Villages Bulgaria for their support!

📍 Plovdiv is the next stop for the exhibition, from 27 October to 7 November.

The project is funded by the National Programme of the Republic of Bulgaria under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021–2027, with the financial support of the European Union.

💬 How can we talk about human trafficking in a way that is accessible and easy to understand?

IOM Bulgaria’s experts and cultural mediators hold information sessions to discuss the risks of human trafficking and how people can protect themselves from dangerous situations.

🧸 Sabri and Yordanka also join these sessions. These two puppets help facilitate communication and make conversations about this important topic more approachable and engaging.

ℹ️ Because it is important to know what to look out for and where to turn when we need help.

📢 New joint factsheet: IOM - UN Migration , UNICEF Europe & Central Asia and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency have released the 2025 Overview of Trends on Migrant and Refugee Children via Mixed Migration Routes in Europe.

In 2025, around 31,100 children were recorded arriving in Europe. More than two-thirds, approximately 20,800 children (67%), were unaccompanied.

Behind the numbers are children and young people navigating complex journeys, often facing significant protection risks and challenges, including violence, exploitation, lack of shelter and food, health concerns, and financial difficulties.

The factsheet brings together evidence on arrivals, asylum, journeys, needs and protection risks to support informed decision-making and advocacy for migrant and refugee children.
