The Madara Rider is a large rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria.

The relief depicts a majestic horseman 23 m above ground level in an almost vertical 100-metre-high cliff. The horseman is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. A dog runs after the horseman. The scene symbolically depicts a military triumph.

The monument is dated back to circa 710 AD. The dating means the monument was created during the rule of Bulgar Khan Tervel, and supports the thesis that it is a portrayal of the khan himself and a work of the Bulgars, a nomadic tribe of warriors which settled in northeastern Bulgaria at the end of the 7th century AD and after merging with the local Slavs gave origin to the modern Bulgarians. Other theories connect the relief with the ancient Thracians, claiming it portrays a Thracian god.

The stone relief is the only one of its kind in Europe. In 1979, it was included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and in 2008 it was chosen as the national symbol of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is famous with its beautiful nature and unique traditions. The popular oil-bearing rose has become an inseperable part of the history and culture of Bulgaria.

Rose Valley is an area that covers a little over 1,200 square miles of land, is spread out over the Karlovo and Kazanlak fields and a part of the Nova Zagora Fields. The valley is famous for its rose growing industry and it is one of the Bulgarian symbols. The rose Rosa Damascene has been cultivated here for centuries, from which by distillation and other processes is obtained rose oil, which is widely used in pharmacy, perfumery and others.

A Rose Festival is held each year in the town of Kazanlak, where a beautiful girl is elected “Queen Rose,” followed by rose picking, street parades and local folk dancing.
