The Modern Languages (ML) sub-department offers a minor program in Modern Languages and Cultures and classes in Bulgarian, German, French, and Spanish at different levels. The language program also includes General Education courses in Social and Cultural Analysis and Textual Analysis modes of inquiry, as well as courses taught in English with a focus on Language and Culture Studies. The ML classe

s give students not only an opportunity to learn a foreign language other than English, but also significantly boost their understanding of foreign countries, traditions, customs, political and cultural environments, and everyday lifestyles. Moreover, the ML courses engage students in delivering presentations, conducting interviews and research, and thus contribute to the improvement of their academic skills. Furthermore, the ML classes substantially prepare students for their future endeavors: Erasmus exchanges, summer schools, Master’s or PhD programs. The ML sub-department is also engaged in organizing co-curricular events at AUBG related to the Bulgarian, German, French, and Spanish languages, and to the respective countries and cultures, such as the annual Languages and Cultures Week. Movie Nights are also part of the co-curricular side of learning a foreign language at AUBG. The ML Faculty organize workshops, competitions, academic projects, trainings and conferences, invite guest lecturers from all around the world, and go on field trips with their students.

We are proud to share that the Modern Languages Department triumphed yesterday in participating in the Annual AUBG student-faculty research conference Fellowship of the Mind. 11 contributions – Adriana Nashkova, Omar Cherchmi, Malainie O’Brien, Arlind Koci, Bianka Deyanova, Kristia Vasileva, Monica Gocevska, and one paper winning the best paper prize for AUBG. Students presented their research in German, Intercultural Communication, Language and Culture, French, and Spanish classes. Congratulations to Arlind Koci and his “Crossing the Rainbow – the Sworn Virgins of Albania” research – this year’s best paper selection. What more can we wish for – more of these smarties and more for our proud and devoted Department.

📚 Entre rêve et réalité : le surréalisme et Paris (1924-1939)
(Between Dream and Reality: Surrealism and Paris, by Prof. Slavkova)

📌 April 9th (Tuesday) at 4 p.m. at Panitza Library

🔖 Abstract: For the surrealists, the city of Paris was not just a beautiful backdrop. Rich in unexpected encounters and juxtapositions, Paris was a site of exploration of the unconscious and the marvelous, the cradle of diverse and subversive experiences bearing the hope of a total revolution. Using marking visual examples and surrealist events, the conference will explore the relationship of this avant-garde movement to its city of birth, from André Breton's founding First manifesto (1924) to the beginning of the Second World War.

🔸 Iveta Slavkova is Assistant Professor at the American University of Paris. Her specialty is the avant-garde in the context of the two World Wars. She is the author of Réparer l'homme. La crise de l'humanisme et l'Homme nouveau des avant-gardes autour de la Grande Guerre (Presse du réel, 2020) and has coedited the EAM volume Crisis (De Gruyter, 2022). She is actually working on creators in the surrealist periphery in post-World War II Paris.
