📍BAC 001 | 23.03 | 7:30pm This narrative traces how a generation of the finest mathematical and physical minds moved from an astonishing success, the advent of C*-algebra theory and its achievements in Quantum Statistical Physics, to one of mathematics’ most shocking failures: the quest for non-trivial models of Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory. It illustrates how mathematics can appear tantalisingly close to physically describing reality, only to face insurmountable structural barriers. It also offers a lesson on the evolution of mathematical research, revealing the complex lifecycle of theoretical challenges, breakthroughs, and dead ends.
