Welcome to Noor Ul Hudda’s public PhD defence on ‘The Sewer as a Sentinel: Advancing Wastewater-Based Epidemiology through Methodological Optimisation and Multi-Pathogen Surveillance in Belgium’.

In this thesis, we optimised laboratory methods for wastewater surveillance and applied them to monitor SARS-CoV-2, enteric viruses, hepatitis E virus, antimicrobial resistance genes, and waterborne parasites in Belgium. Our findings revealed continuous viral circulation not fully captured by clinical reporting and a substantial discrepancy between estimated and reported hepatitis E infections, demonstrating the potential of wastewater as a versatile public health surveillance tool.

In our series: ‘Meet Our Researchers’, we highlight one of the researchers from our faculty. For this edition, we sat down with Dr. Adrian Fabisiak.

At the Medicinal Chemistry Group of UAntwerpen, led by Prof. Pieter Van der Veken, MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Adrian Fabisiak is working on his project PyroVector, which seeks to transform how we treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). We sat down with Adrian to discuss his journey from Warsaw to Antwerp and take a deep dive into his research.

Today, a crew from the Bulgarian National TV visited Prof. Albena Jordanova’s lab of the VIB UAntwerpen to film a documentary about her research on the rare Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

The documentary focuses on Prof. Jordanova receiving this year’s Generet Prize for Rare Diseases, which awards 1 million euros in research funding.

PhD onderzoekers Eline Roeyen, Charlotte Jacobs, Anke de Groot en Sarah van der Reysen en de onderzoekscoördinator Maya Berg van het departement Farmaceutische Wetenschappen gingen op 1 juni terug naar de middelbare school. Niet om op de schoolbanken te zitten, maar om deel uit te maken van de jury voor de onderzoekswerken van de laatstejaarsleerlingen van 6BCW (Biotechnologische en Chemische STEM-wetenschappen) van Pius X.

De leerlingen stelden hun onderzoeksproject voor waar ze de afgelopen maanden intensief aan gewerkt hadden, met een breed scala aan onderwerpen. Zo onderzochten Omar en Matthew of er microplastics vrijkomen bij opwarmmaaltijden. Staf en Friso gingen dan weer kijken naar de invloed van het muziektempo op intensieve inspanningen. Yonah en Winke gingen op zoek naar de beste methode om aspirine te synthetiseren uit schietwilgen. En er kwamen nog veel meer andere topics aan bod.

‘Deze leerlingen tonen echt dat wetenschappelijke nieuwsgierigheid, doorzettingsvermogen en samenwerking de basis vormen voor een geslaagd eindejaarswerk’, vertelt onderzoekscoördinator Maya Berg. Ze hoopt dat deze ervaring hen inspireert om hun weg verder te zetten binnen de life sciences. Deze samenwerking is een mooie kruisbestuiving tussen middelbaar en hoger onderwijs. Een samenwerking die zeker nog verder mag gaan. ‘Volgend schooljaar zijn de leerlingen welkom in onze labo’s om verdere analyses uit te voeren’, aldus Maya.

Om uit te leggen wat die ferroptose juist is en waarom het belangrijk is om dit mechanisme beter te begrijpen kwamen prof. Welcome to Judith R.A. van Rooij’s public PhD defence on ‘Neuroprotection through nutrition: assessing the effects of caloric restriction and resveratrol supplementation on the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s Disease’.

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder causing memory loss and progressive cognitive decline. As these symptoms usually show up later in life, there is a interest in using early lifestyle and diet changes to slow or prevent damage before symptoms become severe. Therefore, my research aimed to use dietary approaches, such as eating fewer calories or taking resveratrol (a natural compound found in foods like grapes) as a supplement, to slow disease progression and support overall brain health.

During this year’s Pint of Science Belgium festival, three of our Faculty’s researchers ditched their lab coats and headed to the pub to talk about their latest research in a fun and easy-to-understand way.

At Café Boekowski PhD researcher Marta Malevic from the Toxicological Centre of UAntwerpen talked about the drink no-one ordered: the chemical cocktail of everyday life. In her research, she monitors these “emerging contaminants” — chemicals that are everywhere, but still full of surprises.

PhD researchers Baukje Bijnens and Jessie Premereur of the VIB UAntwerp put microglia in the spotlights at Filmhuis Klappei. In brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, microglia play an important role. Many genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s are linked to these cells, placing microglia at the center of brain inflammation.

During the break, the audience was invited to bring out their inner artist. Who can create the most beautiful germ, cell or molecule out of Play Doh?
