☀️ We have a little midsummer gift for you.

If you're interested in Czech and Czechoslovak history and the Baťa phenomenon, but couldn't make it to the live recording of the Přepište dějiny podcast at Prague House in Brussels in mid-May, there's good news: the recording of Martin Groman and Michal Stehlík's discussion with Barbora Svobodová on the Baťa phenomenon is now available on YouTube.

👞 The event was held as part of Barbora's current research project on the cultural legacy of the Baťa company, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, with the support of the Representation of the South Moravian Region to the EU

📚 This week, we had the privilege of welcoming Professor Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel, one of the foremost experts in Digital Humanities, to MSH. In addition to delivering an inspiring lecture on the evolving role of historians in the digital age, she joined the MODERNITAS team for an internal seminar and shared valuable insights on our ongoing research projects.
We are grateful for the stimulating discussions and exchange of ideas.

If you have been waiting the second episode of the podcast on Jeanne de Tallenay from the series Les Grands Petits Belges, the wait is finally over.

In the final episode before the summer break, Eve Filée and Stéphanie Peel continue their previous conversation exploring the life of the last salonnière of Brussels, who, within the intimate atmosphere of her salons, devoted herself to occult experiments and esoteric sessions.

In this second part, listeners are invited to discover the life of the woman of letters herself. From skilled diplomat to abbey canoness, every role seemed to suit this remarkable personality — and yet today she remains largely forgotten in Belgium.

✨️ Yesterday’s workshop, Between the Lines of Avant-Garde Culture, was a real pleasure for us. We would like to sincerely thank all our wonderful colleagues who took part and shared their insights on researching women figures within avant-garde studies.

📌 Before Margins of Modernity begins, we have another exciting MODERNITAS event coming up. Join us on Wednesday for the workshop Between the Lines of Avant-Garde Culture.

The workshop will explore themes of typography, book culture, and the contributions of women artists and authors, shedding light on actors and practices that often remain between the lines of canonical narratives.

✨️ One of the highlights of this semester at MODERNITAS is just around the corner.

💡Already next week, we are looking forward to the workshop Margins of Modernity: Networks, Transfers and Mediators, organised by our colleagues Elizaveta Berquin, Eve Filée, and Sybil Raysz within the framework of the ARC project The Artist, The Scientist, and The Industrialist.

Bringing together scholars from different disciplines, the workshop explores the margins of modernity through questions of cultural transfer, mediation, social and geographical peripheries, and overlooked figures and genres that shaped modernist culture across Europe. The programme addresses topics ranging from transnational networks and intellectual exchange to women mediators, periodical culture, children’s literature, applied arts, and other forms often left outside dominant narratives of modernism.
