𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? 🤔

Most participation processes 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 — the asking happens, the report gets written, and 𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱. That is how you turn willing citizens into cynical ones. 💔

We have spent years running this work properly: 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 🌍, school councils where young people decide rules that really apply, 𝗻𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁 🇧🇪. Three things make the difference every single time:

👥 𝟭𝟱𝟬 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀. 𝟮𝟳 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀. 🇪🇺

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆. A computer 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗺 — a school student, a child psychologist, a warehouse supervisor — and asked them to spend three days on the question the rest of us usually just argue about online: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝘁? 🗳️

That is the 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀' 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, and its first session wrapped up on Sunday. 🗓️ Two more follow — online in October, and a final round in November where the group 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Here is the number that explains why it exists: 𝟰𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 😟

We do this kind of work at a smaller scale every week — in neighbourhoods, in classrooms, in civic labs — and we keep learning the same lesson: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. You have to 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼. 💛

🗓️ We are running a 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 on what 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 the cultural and creative sectors actually need — part of a European project with the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗮.

And we have a 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 about it. These rooms usually fill with the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: those already inside the big institutions, already on the right mailing lists. Then everyone is surprised when the results describe only them.

📢 So we are 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘆. Small creative businesses. People who 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀, without the usual training. 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮, 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀.

🚀 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀. All starting this month. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲.

From today, CollectiveUP is part of 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗜𝗧 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 & 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 — small, fast consortia working on where European culture goes next. 💡

They cover 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀. 🏛️ Our partners include universities in Aarhus, Bologna and Côte d'Azur, the Film University Babelsberg, and the Finnish games industry body.

In two of them, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: a 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 for creative professionals here in Belgium 🇧🇪, and a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗯 on using film and audiovisual storytelling to tackle social challenges. 📽️

Our job across all six is fairly simple to describe and surprisingly rare to do: 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱. 🤝

💡 We ran an online session called the 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗯, where social enterprises and technology companies 𝗺𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 — not a webinar with a chat box, but 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 in small mixed rooms, with everyone knowing in advance what they were there to offer.

𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁. ✨

From October, the Collaboration Lab returns as a 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁, co-hosted with Impact Hub Network. 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: each edition is built around 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀, so people find their partners while there is still time to apply together. 🇪🇺

🤝 𝟮𝟰 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀.

That is what we counted this month — 𝟮𝟰 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 between social enterprises and technology companies across Europe, almost all of them between people who had 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘁 until we put them in the same room. 🇪🇺

The document they signed is almost comically lightweight. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁. 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And yet 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱, and we think we know why. 💡 The hard part of a new partnership is never the paperwork. It is the moment after the first friendly call, when both sides wonder whether the other is 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀.

We have heard that sentence from small business owners more times than we can count — and it is almost never said with bad intent. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆.

🇧🇪 Here is the thing: in Belgium, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟮𝟯% of people severely limited in daily life are employed. Our employment gap is one of the widest in Europe.

💡 And since 𝟵𝟵.𝟵% 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀, this gets solved in ordinary workplaces — or it does not get solved at all.
