Congratulations to Morgane Van Belle who received our iCatCare Welfare Research Award for the second year running! 😻🎉

Sarah Ellis, our Cat Friendly Programmes Strategic Lead, attended the European Veterinary Congress of Behavioural Medicine and Animal Welfare (EVCBMAW) in Slovenia, and was a member of the judging panel who awarded Morgane for her presentation on understanding the social behaviour between cats in multi-cat households.

Sarah said, “Morgane's research identified three types of social relationships between pet cats: bonded cats, non-bonded cats, and acquainted cats (i.e. asymmetric, unstable or cautious relationship). Interestingly, neutered female pairings were the least likely to be bonded, results differing from what has previously been found in studies of unneutered free-roaming cats, highlighting the importance of not extrapolating findings from one population type to another. Morgane also found that male-male pairings were the least likely to be non-bonded, providing new insight when considering relationships within multi-cat households".

I’ve had a wonderful week at the EVCBMAW Congress on Behavioural Medicine and Animal Welfare in Ljubljana, Slovenia!
I presented my research on the social relationships between cats, and for the second year in a row, I won the iCatCare Feline Welfare Award! 🐱🏆 I’m so happy and proud about this. This research has been such a huge amount of work, so receiving this recognition means a lot to me.

Ik heb een geweldige week gehad op het EVCBMAW-congres over gedragsgeneeskunde en dierenwelzijn, vorige week in Ljubljana, Slovenië!
Ik presenteerde mijn onderzoek naar de sociale relaties tussen katten, en voor het tweede jaar op rij heb ik de iCatCare Feline Welfare Award gewonnen! 🐱🏆Ik ben hier zo blij en trots om. Dit onderzoek heeft ontzettend veel werk gekost, dus deze erkenning betekent veel voor mij.

Op vrijdag 16 oktober tussen 17h en 19h verdedig ik mijn doctoraatsonderzoek over sociaal gedrag bij huiskatten. Deze verdediging is openbaar, dus iedereen is welkom! Het gaat door op de Faculteit Diergeneeskunde in Merelbeke (Salisburylaan 133, Merelbeke-Melle).

Ben je helemaal gebeten door kattengedrag? Vooraf organsieren we een Engelstalige bijscholing over gedrag en welzjin van katten met sprekers prof. dr. Daniel Mills (UK) en prof. dr. Peter Pongracz (Hongarije). De lezing is vooral bedoeld voor dierenartsen, gedragsprofessionals en onderzoekers, maar iedereen met interesse in gedrag kan aansluiten. On Friday, October 16, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., I will defend my doctoral thesis on social behavior in domestic cats. This defense is open to the public, so everyone is welcome! It will take place at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Merelbeke (Salisburylaan 133, Merelbeke-Melle).

𝐁𝐢𝐣𝐧𝐚 𝐳𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫! 🎓

Afgelopen maandag heb ik met succes mijn doctoraatsthesis verdedigd voor de jury. Met behoorlijk wat stress en een klein hartje begon ik eraan, maar gelukkig is alles heel fijn verlopen! Daarmee is de laatste fase van mijn doctoraatstraject ingezet. Noteer alvast 16 oktober in je agenda voor de openbare verdediging. Hopelijk zie ik jullie daar! 🐱🐈

Last Monday, I successfully defended my PhD thesis before the jury. I started with quite a bit of stress and some nervousness, but fortunately everything went very well! This means that the final phase of my PhD journey has now begun. Mark October 16 in your calendar for the public defense. Hope to see you there! 🐱🐈

The research is spreading. :D

Sometimes when a cat grooms another cat, it's nice. A cat helping another cat out, scratching those hard-to-get spots on the back of the neck. Other times? It's more like, "Hey, I want that nice nap spot, and I'm going to annoy you until you get out of here."
