Japan’s tourists spent a record ¥9.46 trillion last year. Some of that money went to places that never set out to attract them.

Konbini, public bathhouses and roadside rest stops offer a glimpse of everyday Japan, without manufacturing an experience around it. And with a record 42.7 million overseas visitors last year, more people than ever are discovering the country through places like these.

A look at social media makes the shift clear: even a trip to 7-Eleven has become travel content. Everyday Japan is now part of what visitors come to experience.

Great days in Salalah, Oman!

Our colleague Afrah Al Nasseri recently had the opportunity to join the OSHRM Annual Forum, connecting with regional leaders from across sectors to exchange ideas on digital transformation and workforce empowerment. It was especially nice to reconnect with H.E. Dr. Ali Qassim Jawad of the Royal Academy of Management along the way.

A big thank you to the Omani Society for Human Resource Management for bringing together such a strong community and creating space for meaningful conversations.

We look forward to continuing these and building new connections across Oman and the wider region.

“L” for LuckyFes!

Our CEO Aiste Dewulf is in Japan and made it just in time for the 5th edition of the music festival.

LuckyFes was launched by GLOBIS President Yosh*to Hori as part of his ongoing efforts to revitalize his hometown of Mito. What began just three years ago has quickly become a major event, drawing nearly 100,000 people this year.

Always great to spend time with colleagues in Tokyo when we get the chance!

During a recent visit to Tokyo, Toru Takahashi u shared insights from his PhD research with the team. His thesis explores why practices that may appear inefficient can still play an important role in helping organizations innovate and stay connected to their purpose.

Thank you to the team for organizing this session!

It’s gift giving season in Japan.

Every July, millions of Japanese ship boxes of fruit, beer, and sweets across the country, with a market reaching ¥656 billion. This Japanese tradition of “ochugen” is a midsummer ritual of thanks exchanged between colleagues, clients, teachers, and old friends.

Good conversations in Tokyo last week!

It was a pleasure to welcome Sjouke, President of the Japan Club at Universiteit Gent to the GLOBIS Tokyo campus.

We had a great discussion about collaborating on future guest lectures and workshops in Belgium, sharing perspectives on Japan, Japanese companies, leadership, and cross-cultural management.

We look forward to bringing these conversations to students at Ghent University!

What do you care about deeply, and how do you want to use your experience to contribute?

It is a question that may take time to answer, but one worth continuing to ask.

Our career is often shaped by practical decisions: which opportunity to take, which skill to develop, or what step to pursue next.

Kokorozashi invites us to step back from those immediate choices and consider the broader direction behind them.
