Because of the busy program of the course, I only saw a little part of Lisbon. After taking a tram in Lisbon to go to the underground and then to the airport, unfortunately this was the end of our international exchange . I said goodbye but promised I would come back later for sure. Lisbon is a very exciting city with lots of interesting places to visit.

In the afternoon, I visited the beautiful castle and in the evening, I had dinner in Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon. During the meal, there was live Fado- music, a very typical and appreciated Portuguese way of singing. And of course, I ate bacalhau, a typical Portuguese dish of dried fish. Although I like eating fish I didn’t like this bacalhau very much , just because , yes indeed , it was … dry.

In my free time on Saturday, I visited Oceanário in Lisbon, the second biggest aquarium in the world, built to celebrate the world exhibition in 1998. I did not just like the visit, I loved it very much! I couldn’t get enough of all the fish, otters, amphibians, sea nettles (very rare) and jellyfish. I took lots of photos, but I’m afraid, that doesn’t show how spectacular this “world underwater” really is.

On the last day of the course, after a session about how to deal with resistance and how to convey unpleasant messages in conversations in a successful way, we made an assessment of the complete course . To be honest, my expectations had been higher and unfortunately not completely fulfilled. Perhaps, I learned more from the input of the other participants than I learned from the course itself. But learning from participants is also an important part of exchange programs. During the course, we made a giant paper of our school and contacts to search for equal interests for sharing expertise. I found a school in Spain that is willing to invite teachers of our school. Hopefully, as a result there will be written another project next year so that we can keep up being international with our teachers!

In the afternoon, we had a 3 hours’ guided tour in Lissabon. Lissabon is not the most beautiful town I have ever seen, but it is very interesting with lots of cosy spots and districts. And they have some very nice police-dogs! Of course, not as beautiful as my own German shepherd. Oh, and I just forgot to mention: The policeman was nice too

On Thursday, we worked with the “Enneagram”-test. It helps you to determine yours and others’ personalities. We prepared the test itself at home as a pre-task. There are 9 types of personalities. It seems, I am a mediator and a loyalist. Hm, I guessed I would have been the romantic type … Being a mediator and loyalist means that I am an easy person to deal with and that I am very loyal to everyone. Of course, I have only mentioned the positive elements .
In the evening, we went to Almada to visit the big statue Cristo Rei. You have amazing views here over the river Taag. We also went for supper in Almada. I had caldeirada, a Portuguese fish-soup.

Before we can change behaviour, we first have to learn about our own behaviour. That is what we did on Tuesday and Wednesday through the core qualities of Daniel Ofman. It is important to learn your own and others’ core qualities, pitfalls, challenges and allergies. Not a very easy exercise and very confronting sometimes.

Monday 16 May
Today we have been thinking in pairs about the concepts of coaching. On the picture, you can see me and Kent, my Danisch partner. We are doing some excercises. He is the head of a balletschool in Denmark, how special is that? We are explaining the group that couching teachers in the first place has to do with trust (as a base) and empathy (as a condition). The way we want to coach, is by guiding to solutions instead of dictating or directing them.
In the evening we had a long beach-walk which we finished at a beach house. It is a good way to think things over.

Yesterday, after a 3 hours’ flight, I arrived in very sunny Lissabon. The course “Couching in Education” started at 2 pm on Pentecost (Whitsunday). No day of rest in Portugal on Whitmonday either.
19 people, a mix of teachers, coordinators and headmasters, will attend this course, which is quite a large number. As the course has been organised by the Eekhout Academy, a Dutch training center for schools, there are a lot of Belgian people. The others come, amongst other countries, from Poland, Turkey, Denmark and Rumania.
At the evening, we were treated to a glass of Moscatel on the beach of Fonte da Telha, a small fishermen’s village. Moscatel is a kind of Portuguese sweet wine. It tastes a little bit like sangria (without the fruit).
What we ate, wasn’t completely clear, but I’m still not sure about the combination of fried bananas, pineapple and black bean sauce with meat …
I enjoyed the first day, got to learn new and interesting people and look forward to a challenging course during this week.
