🚨 Opportunity Alert | Assistant Professor – Migration and Politics at Concordia University

The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Concordia University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of migration politics, with a specialization in Canadian politics, public policy or public administration.

Duties include conducting research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage meaningfully in the strategic development and scholarly activities of the IRMS - Institute for Research on Migration and Society. The successful candidate will contribute to the research program of the multi-institutional Canada First Research Excellence Fund in which Concordia participates, entitled, "Canada Migrant Integration in the mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides".

✍ ALF Knowledge for Action: Research Call | Anna Lindh Foundation

Through Knowledge for Action, selected researchers develop concise, policy-oriented Briefs that translate their findings into accessible knowledge for policy and civil-society practice. Their work also contributes to the Pact for the Mediterranean’s objective of strengthening evidence-based knowledge and policy cooperation across the Common Mediterranean Space.

Selected researchers will have the opportunity to:

🔸 Bring their findings to research, policy and civil-society audiences across the Euro-Mediterranean region
🔸Strengthen the visibility and practical relevance of their research and have their Brief peer-reviewed and, following final approval, published by ALF
🔸Receive €700 net to produce the Brief, with the possibility of receiving up to €500 net to organise an Academic Dialogue.
🔸Build connections within the wider Euro-Mediterranean research community.

Knowledge for Action welcomes researchers at all career stages, including early-career researchers. Applicants must be nationals of one of the 43 Member States of the Anna Lindh Foundation and affiliated with a university, think tank or specialised research centre.

📢 2027 IMISCOE PhD School | Regional Migration Studies: Dynamics of Human Mobility, Governance and Socioeconomic Transformations

Taking place from 13–17 September 2027 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona, the 2027 IMISCOE PhD School, organised by GRITIM-UPF and the EuroMedMig PhD Network, invites participants to critically examine how regions are imagined, constructed, governed and transformed through migration, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of studying migration beyond national boundaries.

👩‍🏫 Bringing together doctoral students with senior researchers working across different regions of the world, the five-day programme will create a space for comparison across regional contexts and for critical discussion of how a regional approach can contribute to migration studies.

The Migrant Transnationalism (MITRA) Standing Committee is organizing a webinar on Transnational Engagement on 9 October 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 CET.

Transnational and translocal engagements, such as sending remittances, are often celebrated as contributions to development in countries and communities of origin. However, they are also increasingly questioned by host-society communities, policymakers, and communities of origin. While host societies may view the sending of remittances with suspicion, seeing them as money flowing out of the country, communities in countries of origin may condemn migrants for building businesses in their countries of origin or criticize them for leaving their children behind in pursuit of financial gain abroad.

In this webinar, we draw attention to these debates, focusing not only on remittances but also on other forms of transnational and translocal engagement, through the concept of "deservingness.” While there is a burgeoning literature on “deservingness” that focuses on attitudes toward migrants in host societies, research on the “deservingness” of transnational engagement remains limited. The concept of “deservingness” refers to judgments rooted in assessments of moral worth, through which migrants and their practices are perceived as more or less deserving.

Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in the discussion.

📢 Call for Papers! | 24th IMISCOE Annual Conference

Together, Veerle Buffel and Sorana Toma are organising a panel titled “Migrant Mental Health: Diversity, Stigma and Access to Care” at the 24th IMISCOE Annual Conference, taking place in Brussels, Belgium, from 6–9 July 2027.

Mental health is an important yet often overlooked dimension of migration and social inclusion. Migrants and refugees are not a homogeneous group, and their experiences of mental health, stigma, help-seeking and access to care can differ substantially depending on their migration trajectories and social positions.
Contributions that explore diversity and inequalities in migrant mental health are welcome, including differences related to migration status, gender, age, socioeconomic position, country of origin, racialisation, or migration trajectory, as well as research examining how these dimensions intersect.

The organisers are particularly interested in contributions addressing:

🔹 Stigma, taboos and representations of mental health within migrant communities and receiving societies;
🔹Help-seeking and pathways to care, including formal and informal sources of support;
🔹Culturally and linguistically shaped understandings of mental health and psychological distress;
🔹The role of families, communities and social networks in coping and accessing support;
🔹Access to and experiences of mental health services, including barriers and inequalities;
🔹The responsiveness of services to diverse migrant needs and questions of cultural and linguistic appropriateness;
🔹Methodological and ethical challenges in researching migrant mental health and access to care.

Quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods and participatory approaches, as well as contributions from different disciplinary and geographical contexts, are welcome.
