📢 Vacancy: PhD Position Research Ethics

The Department of Bioethics and Health Humanities at the Julius Center of the UMC Utrecht is looking for a PhD student to join their inter- and transdisciplinary department to study pressing ethical issues in pediatric oncology research. They are looking for an ambitious researcher to bridge ethics, law, and clinical innovation, helping to accelerate safe and fair cancer treatments for children across Europe.

💡 Areas of focus include (but are not limited to):
- Evaluating the ethical-legal conditions required to study CAR-T cell therapy as a frontline treatment rather than a last resort for children.
- Conducting quantitative and qualitative assessments of research ethics committee reviews to help harmonize clinical trial procedures in Europe.
- Developing vignette studies alongside the Oncode Accelerator project to optimize informed consent for complex, adaptive platform trials involving parents and children.

🎯 What are they looking for:
- a background in health sciences and/or expertise in bioethics
- proficiency in Dutch, essential for carrying out surveys and qualitative interview research
- affinity with (pediatric) oncology is a plus
- a motivated, ambitious, and creative student with a high level of curiosity and autonomy who can work and position him/her self in a multidisciplinary team. Preferably flexible with a collaborative working style, as this project combines multiple disciplines.

📢 Fourth Open Expert Meeting on the Revision of the WMA Declaration of Taipei

This September, the World Medical Association (WMA) will host a three-day, open-to-all expert meeting in Oslo to address the revision of its Declaration of Taipei, a key ethical framework governing the use of health databases and biobanks beyond research. To encourage as much global participation in the revision process as possible, the WMA is collaborating with its members to host a series of expert meetings in different regions. This is the fourth meeting in that series, which will be focused on the tension between consent, the common good and trust in public authorities.

💡 Health data and biological material hold massive potential to accelerate public health and scientific discovery. But technology and data collection cannot thrive without robust ethical boundaries. True protection for patients requires navigating the delicate friction points between commercial, political, or administrative misuse and the core human rights of autonomy, privacy, and confidentiality.

🤝 Therefore, this global forum brings together physicians, medical associations, and international experts to create a vital dialogue. Together, participants will debate two main approaches to ensure safeguarding ethical principles for the collection, storage and use of health data and biological material:
- Based on informed consent: what conditions must be met for it to be considered ethically acceptable to rely on consent as a basis for the use of health data and biological material beyond individual care?
- Based on alternative safeguards: how to maintain ethical safeguards beyond consent?

📢 Workshop: Care, consent and communication in childbirth
📍 University of Nottingham, United Kingdom

In August, the University of Nottingham will host an interdisciplinary workshop on care, consent and communication in childbirth. “For many people, childbirth is among the most significant and vulnerable experiences of their lives. However, it is also one in which patient autonomy and epistemic agency is routinely compromised. Birth trauma, often stemming from poor consent practices and breakdowns in communication between patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs), is increasingly recognised as a serious and widespread harm.”

By bringing together diverse voices and adopting the lens of birth planning and patient-HCP interaction, the workshop aims to advance the ethical understanding of care, communication and consent during childbirth, the phenomenon of birth trauma and its implications for obstetric care.

The workshop will take place 10:30-16:00 on the 6th of August 2026 at the University of Nottingham.

The Ethox Centre, Oxford Population Health (University of Oxford) is seeking a full-time Researcher (Humanities/Social Sciences) to join the Wellcome Trust–funded project “After the End: Lived Experiences and Aftermaths of Diseases, Disasters and Drugs in Global Health.”

💡 This interdisciplinary project examines questions of time justice, waiting, memory, care, trauma, and what it means for something to “end” in the context of diseases, disasters, and global access to medicines. Bringing together perspectives from ethics, anthropology, sociology, history, law, literary studies, cognitive psychology, and public health, the project combines qualitative research with innovative, creative methods (e.g., photography, immersive XR, poetry, and film) to inform policy and practice.

🤝 The ideal candidate:
- holds (or is close to completing) a PhD/DPhil in Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related discipline
- has experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, literature analysis)
- can work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary, international team
- demonstrates strong analytical thinking and academic writing skills
- has excellent communication skills and interest in global health and bioethics

- contribute to the development and delivery of research within the project
