Our colleagues Renee Vandamme, Leonie Vanhove, Machteld Vandecandelaere and Jan Sermeus conduct research as part of the TACT project https://tactresearch.be/. TACT stands for Teaching About Controversial and Sensitive Topics. The project explores the causes of tension that may arise when teaching sensitive and controversial themes — topics that need to be addressed with tact, such as LGBTQIA+ issues, slavery, nuclear energy, eating disorders, evolution, and many others.

In this and other blog posts, they share updates on the progress of the project.

TACT in de klas
https://tactresearch.be/2026/06/25/tact-in-de-klas/

Some time ago, we shared an invitation to read and discuss Jan Elen’s book "Onderwijzen is meer dan lesgeven" (https://lnkd.in/eeEpgSZ8) together.

We are happy to share some photos from the event, where we read, discussed, and exchanged ideas about the book.

Many thanks to everyone who joined and helped make it happen, and to Jan!

This week, Leonie and Renee attended the Sig13&19 conference, with following theme: Navigating Polarisation and Fostering Civic Engagement through Education.

Renee gave a poster presentation on her ESM study on Teaching Sensitive and Controversial Issues (SCIs). More specifically, she introduced her ongoing research on the relationship between teachers’ current self-efficacy and their communicative approach when teaching SCIs.

Leonie gave a presentation on Teaching Sensitive and Controversial Issues in Natural Sciences: an interview study. Specifically, she explored the determinants of denial as a type of perceived classroom tension.

They also met some very interesting people and had some fruitful conversations, possibly leading to new research ideas for the future.
