Eco Food for Thought - looking back on our schoolyear with the Kitchen Adventure programme

Young people in Olsztyn, Poland came together to discuss sustainable food choices, healthy lifestyles, and the impact of our everyday decisions on the planet during the “Eco Food for Thought” educational event at the University of Warmia and Mazury.

One of the highlights was a presentation by Joanna Michalak from the Food Bank in Olsztyn, who shared how food education, reducing food waste, and responsible consumption can help build a healthier and more sustainable future.

The event showed how important it is to engage young people in conversations about food systems, ecology, and conscious consumer choices - values that are also at the heart of the Kitchen Adventure project.

Obesity: understanding a complex health challenge

Obesity is a chronic, complex disease, not a question of aesthetics or willpower.

Across the WHO European Region, almost 1 in 4 adults live with obesity (BMI ≥30). BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple indicator based on weight and height used to assess health risk. Childhood obesity also remains alarmingly high in many European countries, especially among children aged 6–9 years.

❤️‍🩹 Obesity significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and other non-communicable diseases.
It also impacts mental health, quality of life and long-term wellbeing.

But obesity does not happen in isolation. It is shaped by food environments, social inequalities, access to healthy options, marketing exposure, and education.

Prevention must start early, not by promoting body ideals, but by strengthening food literacy, critical thinking, and healthy habits from childhood.

👩‍🍳 At , we contribute to this change by empowering families through hands-on cooking, experiential learning and interactive food education that empowers children to make informed choices for their health.

🌍 Earth Day in the classroom – make it real
On April 22, Earth Day is the perfect moment to bring sustainability closer to students.

👉 Start with something simple: food.

What we eat connects directly to the planet—through production, choices, and waste.

🍽️ With tools from FoodEducators—like the Sustainable Foodtruck Challenge—and recipes from Kitchen Adventure, students can learn by doing, not just listening.

✨ Small choices matter.
This Earth Day, ask your students:
What’s on your plate—and what does it mean for the planet?

🌱👩‍🍳 !

Today we introduce Michalina Jakubowska, Project Coordinator at the Food Bank in Olsztyn (Poland), one of the partners of the project.

During their face-to-face event, Michalina shared how their team is implementing the project through both theoretical and practical sessions for students and their parents. These sessions not only teach cooking skills, but also highlight the value of spending time together in the kitchen as a family.

Cooking together helps families build healthier habits, learn about sustainable food choices and turn everyday meals into meaningful shared experiences. 💚

Stay tuned for more voices from our partners across Europe!
