Meet Josep L. Pelegrí 👋

Josep L. Pelegrí is an oceanographer based in Barcelona, specializing in ocean circulation, biogeochemical processes, and climate change 🌊. With a holistic planetary vision, he is deeply dedicated to citizen engagement and mobilization toward harmony with nature 🌍✨.

As a researcher at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) and former director 🏢, Josep has shaped the next generation of marine scientists by supervising 21 PhD and 30 MSc theses 🎓. He has contributed over 140 peer-reviewed articles and numerous essays to scientific discourse 📚, advancing our understanding of the ocean's role in our planet's future.

His leadership as Dean of the School of Marine Sciences and Spanish National Coordinator for Earth Sciences reflects his unwavering belief that ocean science must serve both society and our planet's future 💚. We're thrilled to have him sharing his vision with us in Barcelona!

It's time to introduce the inspiring keynote speakers who will guide us as beacons of
💡💙.

👋 Meet Ronaldo Christofoletti, a Professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where he coordinates the Maré de Ciência Program 🌊. He chairs the UNESCO/IOC Expert Group on Ocean Literacy and leads Brazil's participation in the Blue School Programme
(Rede Escola Azul) and the Brazilian Ocean Olympiad (O2) 🏅.

He also coordinates the development of Brazil's national Blue Curriculum (Currículo Azul) in partnership with the Ministry of Education 📚. His work bridges ocean science, education, and public engagement, combining institutional partnerships with hands-on
field experience, including scientific expeditions 🌍.

We're honored to have him with us in Barcelona! 🙌

What is Blue Education, and why does it matter? 🎬 Our new BlueLightS animated video is here!

🌊 Many people think teaching about the ocean is only about waves 🌊 and fish 🐟. But Blue Education goes much further — it connects climate 🌍, biodiversity 🦋, communities 🤝, rivers 🏞️, lakes 💧, seas 🌊, coastlines 🏖️, and the future students will inherit 👧🧒✨.

The video follows educators 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫 from across Europe as they discuss the challenges of bringing ocean and water topics into classrooms 📚, from limited time ⏰ and resources 📖 to the need for teacher training 🎓, digital tools 💻, and stronger curriculum links 🔗.

If you’re a school looking to bring ocean and water topics into your teaching, this is for you. 🙌

The 3rd BlueLightS Funding Call is open to primary, secondary, and vocational schools across EU Member States and Horizon Europe associated countries. 🏫

Whether you’re located by the coast or inland, you can apply with a project that connects your students to real-world water and ocean challenges.

You can apply:
✅ As a single school or together with others
✅ As an existing European Blue School, or become one through your project

This is your chance to engage students in hands-on learning and join a growing network of schools working towards a more sustainable future.
