I was checking this Una at the music school today. Of course, I need to play something to make sure everything feels and sounds as it should. So I played a little Unfolding. And somehow, a quick harp check turned into a small moment to slow down and simply enjoy the sound. Maybe that’s why I still love playing this piece so much. It feels natural under the fingers, with space to breathe and let the music flow. Sometimes you don’t need a reason to play. You just start… and stay a little longer than planned. What piece do you always end up playing when you sit behind a harp?

Sometimes the left hand is doing much more than just supporting the melody. In one of the arrangements of All Through the Night, the left hand is quite active — and at first, it can feel like a lot to manage. But you don’t need to practise the whole pattern over and over. There’s a much easier way to build it up, step by step, so your hand starts to understand the movement and it can eventually feel natural and flowing. Today I was at a music school, checking and adjusting their harps. And after every harp is checked, I like to sit down and play for a moment. Today’s test piece: All Through the Night. A little moment from this summer. I sat down with my harp in the garden, looking out over the fields and the trees. No sheet music. No plan. Nothing I had to practise or improve. I just started playing and followed wherever the music wanted to go. Sometimes I think we need more moments like this with our harp. Not everything has to be productive. Not everything has to become a piece. Sometimes you can simply play… and enjoy where you are.

Some days are just full. Too much to do. Too much noise. Too much going on in your head. And then I sit down at the harp and play something like Londonderry Air. No need to rush. Just follow the melody, let it breathe, and slowly everything becomes a little quieter. That is one of the things I love most about the harp. Tonight I’m playing Unfolding to slow down after the day. No goal. No pressure to improve anything. Just letting my hands move, listening to the sound, and giving the music some space. That is still one of the things I love most about this piece. It feels natural under the fingers, with enough room to breathe.
