(Eng below) 💚Afgelopen jaar was het weer een druk jaar bij de Green Office, met activiteiten en initiatieven zoals plantacties, de fairtrade en duurzame week, het repair café en nog veel meer! Ook vierden we eind april de 10e verjaardag van de Green Office. Deze dag stond in het teken van het vieren van en reflectie over ons bestaan, en met verschillende workshops keken we niet alleen terug op de afgelopen 1O jaar, maar ook wat de toekomst zal brengen. Zo blijven we ook gemotiveerd voor nog 10 jaar meer aan duurzame initiatieven en intentionele projecten, en kijken we mee uit naar een nieuw academiejaar met nog meer Green Office! Tot dan, en we wensen iedereen een fijne zomer!

💚 Last year was another busy one at the Green Office, with activities and initiatives such as planting events, the Fair Trade week, the Repair Café and many more! We also celebrated the Green Office’s 10th anniversary at the end of April. This day was all about celebrating and reflecting on our journey, and through various workshops we not only looked back on the past 10 years, but also considered what the future holds. This has left us feeling motivated for another 10 years of sustainable initiatives and purposeful projects, and we’re looking forward to a new academic year with even more Green Office! Until then, we wish everyone a lovely summer!

🌱 Circulair bouwen in de praktijk: project Paddenhoek 🌱
Wat gebeurt er wanneer geëngageerde projectleiders en een onderzoeker met expertise in circulair aanbesteden de ruimte krijgen om te experimenteren?
Dan ontstaan projecten zoals Paddenhoek met heel wat circulaire aspecten:
✅ Behoud van een groot deel van de bestaande constructie.
✅ Metselwerk met een CO₂-negatieve baksteen, die CO₂ opneemt tijdens het uitharden dankzij carbonatatietechnologie. Bovendien bestaat deze baksteen voor slechts 20% uit primaire grondstoffen; de overige 80% komt uit reststromen van de staalindustrie.
✅ Toepassing van CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) in plaats van beton voor de nieuwbouwvleugel. Waar mogelijk werd het principe gevolgd dat de structuur ook de afwerking vormt, waardoor minder bijkomende materialen nodig zijn. Dankzij het lagere gewicht van CLT kon ook het gebruik van beton in de funderingen beperkt worden.
✅ Recyclage van natuursteen uit de bestaande gevel. De elementen werden verwerkt tot recyclagegranulaten voor nieuwe betonnen prefabgevelpanelen en sierelementen.
✅ Hergebruik van urinoirs en toiletpotten.
✅ Aanpassing en hergebruik van de bestaande kitchenettes. De wandkasten kregen zonder ingrijpende wijzigingen een nieuwe plaats in het gebouw.
✅ Terugname van de bestaande linoleumvloer door Tarkett voor recyclage.
✅ Losliggende plaatsing van de dakisolatie (foamglas), waardoor latere demontage mogelijk is.
✅ Dakbedekking die enkel aan de opkanten verlijmd is. Het grootste deel ligt los en wordt op zijn plaats gehouden door ballast met keien en het groendak, wat toekomstige recuperatie vergemakkelijkt.
✅ Demonteerbare wandprofielen in de kantoorruimtes van het CLT-gedeelte, zodat ruimtes eenvoudig kunnen meegroeien of verkleinen zonder grote afbraakwerken.
✅ Materialen die een tweede leven kregen via het hergebruikcircuit, waaronder een stalen buitentrap, de constructie van de fietsenberging en binnendeuren.
💡 Project Paddenhoek toont dat circulair bouwen mogelijk wordt wanneer kennis, ambitie en vertrouwen samenkomen. Niet door één grote ingreep, maar door vele doordachte keuzes die samen een duurzame impact creëren.

🌱 Circular construction in practice: the Paddenhoek project 🌱
What happens when committed project leaders and a researcher with expertise in circular procurement are given the freedom to experiment?
This leads to projects such as Paddenhoek, which incorporate a whole host of circular aspects:
✅ Retention of a large part of the existing structure.
✅ Brickwork using a CO₂-negative brick, which absorbs CO₂ during curing thanks to carbonation technology. Furthermore, this brick consists of only 20% primary raw materials; the remaining 80% comes from waste streams from the steel industry.
✅ Use of CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) instead of concrete for the new wing. Where possible, the principle was followed whereby the structure also serves as the finish, thereby reducing the need for additional materials. Thanks to the lower weight of CLT, the use of concrete in the foundations could also be minimised.
✅ Recycling of natural stone from the existing façade. The elements were processed into recycled aggregates for new precast concrete façade panels and decorative elements.
✅ Reuse of urinals and toilet bowls.
✅ Adaptation and reuse of the existing kitchenettes. The wall cupboards were relocated within the building without any major alterations.
✅ Collection of the existing linoleum flooring by Tarkett for recycling.
✅ Loose-laid installation of the roof insulation (foam glass), allowing for future removal.
✅ Roof covering glued only at the edges. The majority lies loose and is held in place by ballast consisting of boulders and the green roof, which facilitates future recovery.
✅ Dismantlable wall profiles in the office spaces of the CLT section, so that spaces can easily be expanded or reduced without major demolition work.
✅ Materials given a second life through the reuse cycle, including an external steel staircase, the structure of the cycle shed and internal doors.
💡 The Paddenhoek project demonstrates that circular construction is possible when knowledge, ambition and trust come together. Not through a single major intervention, but through many well-considered choices that collectively create a sustainable impact.

(Eng below) 🔥Geweldig nieuws! Ook de faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen gaat een engagement aan voor meer plantaardig. Vanaf september 2026 gaan ze voor 100% vegetarische catering, waarvan minstens 50% plantaardig. Dat besloot de faculteitsraad in juni 2026.

🫶 De faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen is nu al de tweede faculteit aan de UGent die een faculteitsbreed engagement aangaat. Ook de faculteit Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen koos eerder voor een engagement van twee sterren vanaf volgend academiejaar. Enorm trots op deze faculteiten om mee dit sterke signaal te geven voor meer duurzaamheid te zetten! Wie zal de volgende zijn? 👀

🔥Great news! The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences is also committing to a more plant-based approach. From September 2026, they will commit to 100% vegetarian catering, of which at least 50% will be plant-based. This was decided by the Faculty Council in June 2026.

🫶 The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences is now the second faculty at Ghent University to make a faculty-wide commitment. The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences also previously opted for a two-star commitment from the start of the next academic year. We’re incredibly proud of these faculties for helping to send this strong signal in favour of greater sustainability! Who will be next? 👀

👉 On the ‘Wall of Fame’ on our website, you’ll also find an overview of all departments and research groups at other faculties that have already made a commitment. On the website, we provide you with tools to help motivate your own department, and you can easily find sustainable caterers.

☀️ Onze zomereditie van Transitie UGent bruiste opnieuw van energie!
We trokken naar de wijk Ekkergem, waar we kennis maakten met de buurtwerking, het buurthuis, het groen, de heerlijke catering en de enthousiaste gidsen. Daarnaast gingen we in gesprek over thema’s die leven binnen én buiten de universiteit: de rol van de universiteit in de stad, interdisciplinair onderzoek, fossil fuel ties en klimaatemoties bij docenten.
🏆 Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte zetten we ook de strafste duurzaamheidsacties van het voorbije jaar in de bloemetjes (kersen):
🍒 De Jonge Academie ontwikkelde een duurzaamheidskompas dat zichtbaar maakt hoe universiteiten presteren en vooruitgang boeken op vlak van duurzaamheid. Zo stimuleren ze beleidsmakers om de transitie te versnellen.
🍒 Carl Lachat, Liesbeth Jacxsens en Christine Yung Hung (Faculteit Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen UGent) versterken via studentenonderzoek en living labs het project Resto Coupure.
🍒 Ignaas Devisch, Eline Lievens en Laurence Hendrickx (Faculteit Geneeskunde en Gezondheidswetenschappen) ontwikkelden een podcast over de rol van de wetenschapper in de publieke ruimte.
🍒 Karen Steukers (Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen en Architectuur - UGent), Benedikte De Baets en Ellen Brisart (Campus en Gebouw) brachten onderzoek en praktijk rond circulair bouwen samen in het project Paddenhoek.
🍒 De Faculteit Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen UGent creëerde samen met ondersteunende diensten en buurtbewoners een groenblauwe parel op de campus. De nieuwe wadi kreeg de naam David Attenborough.
🍒 De Faculteit Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen UGent en de UGent - Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen schakelen vanaf volgend academiejaar over naar 100% vegetarische catering, waarvan minstens 50% plantaardig.
🍒 Het ecoteam van Capture neemt het voortouw in het verduurzamen van laboactiviteiten en onderzoekt hoe deze aanpak verder uitgerold kan worden binnen de hele UGent.

☀️ Our summer edition of Transitie UGent was once again buzzing with energy!
We headed to the Ekkergem neighbourhood, where we got to know the local community initiatives, the community centre, the green spaces, the delicious catering and the enthusiastic guides. We also discussed topics of current interest both within and outside the university: the university’s role in the city, interdisciplinary research, fossil fuel ties and climate-related emotions among lecturers.
🏆 As is our annual tradition, we also celebrated the most impressive sustainability initiatives of the past year:
🍒 The Young Academy developed a sustainability compass that highlights how universities are performing and making progress in the field of sustainability. In this way, they encourage policymakers to accelerate the transition.
🍒 Carl Lachat, Liesbeth Jacxsens and Christine Yung Hung (Faculty of Bioengineering Sciences) are strengthening the Resto Coupure project through student research and living labs.
🍒 Ignaas Devisch, Eline Lievens and Laurence Hendrickx (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) have developed a podcast on the role of the scientist in the public sphere.
🍒 Karen Steukers (Faculty of Engineering and Architecture), Benedikte De Baets and Ellen Brisart (Campus and Buildings) brought together research and practice in circular construction in the Paddenhoek project.
🍒 The Faculty of Bioengineering Sciences, together with support services and local residents, created a green-and-blue gem on campus. The new wadi was named after David Attenborough.
🍒 From the start of the next academic year, the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences will switch to 100% vegetarian catering, at least 50% of which will be plant-based.
🍒 Capture’s eco-team is taking the lead in making laboratory activities more sustainable and is investigating how this approach can be rolled out further across the whole of Ghent University.

(ENG below) Samen op weg naar een duurzamere toekomst in het hoger onderwijs!🌱
Gisteren lanceerde Jonge Academie het Duurzaamheidskompas: een inspirerend platform waarop je de evolutie van het hoger onderwijs richting duurzaamheid kan opvolgen én bestaande initiatieven kan ontdekken.
Het doel? Van elkaar leren en elkaar versterken. Elke instelling heeft wel een sterke praktijk rond duurzaamheid waar anderen naar opkijken. Met het Duurzaamheidskompas maken we die goede voorbeelden zichtbaar, zodat we elkaar kunnen inspireren én helpen om samen een hoger niveau te bereiken.
Ook binnen de VLIR wordt duurzaamheid verder verankerd. Er werd een werkgroep duurzaamheid opgericht, waarin zowel duurzaamheidscoördinatoren als beleidsverantwoordelijken samenwerken. Het Duurzaamheidskompas zal daarbij een belangrijke leidraad vormen voor de verdere werking.

Working together towards a more sustainable future in higher education! 🌱
Yesterday, the Young Academy launched a Sustainability Compass: an inspiring platform (in Dutch) where you can follow the evolution of higher education towards sustainability and discover existing initiatives.
The aim? To learn from and support one another. Every institution has strong sustainability practices that others look up to. With the Sustainability Compass, we’re highlighting these good examples so that we can inspire and help one another to reach a higher level together.
Sustainability is also being further embedded within VLIR. A sustainability working group has been set up, in which both sustainability coordinators and policy makers work together. The Sustainability Compass will serve as an important guide for its future operations.

Duurzaamheidskompas Duurzaamheidskompas van de Jonge Academie: website die de duurzaamheidsinspanningen in kaart brengt van het Vlaamse hoger onderwijs (universiteiten en hogescholen). Cijfers, indicatoren en inspirerende praktijken rond klimaatbeleid worden hier op één plek transparant verzameld.

De film Wash Out vertelt het verhaal van hoe een groep landloze boeren op het eiland Sicogon, gelegen in de Filipijnen, de krachten bundelde en in opstand kwam tegen een gigantisch bedrijf, hoe ze zo dicht bij de overwinning kwamen – en hoe ze werden verraden, en nog steeds worden verraden, door een regering die beweert aan hun kant te staan. Hun strijd weerspiegelt de stillere maar niet minder gewelddadige vormen van onteigening die zich elders afspelen – van de gegentrificeerde wijken van Brussel tot gemeenschappen over de hele wereld die ontheemd raken om plaats te maken voor de transitie naar groene energie en energieverslindende datacenters die de digitale elite bedienen.

💬 De filmvertoning wordt gevolgd door een interactief gesprek tussen de filmmaker, dr. Herbert Docena, en de deelnemers over land, verzet en solidariteit.

🎥 Would you vacation on an island paradise if you knew local families were forced off their land to build it? The film Wash Out tells the story of how a group of landless farmers in Sicogon Island, located in the Philippines, came together and stood up against a corporate behemoth, how they came so close to victory—and how they were betrayed, and continue to be betrayed, by a government that claims to be on their side. Their struggle echoes the quieter but no less violent forms of dispossession unfolding elsewhere—from the gentrifying neighborhoods of Brussels, to communities around the world displaced to make way for green energy transitions and energy‑hungry data centers that serve the digital elite.

💬 The film screening will be followed by an interactive conversation between the filmmaker, Dr. Herbert Docena and the participants on the politics of land, resistance, and solidarity.
