Nitte Students in Gent 29/09/2017

Arya K.S, Swetha Ann Varghese and V. Monisha, Master of Public Health Scholars, Nitte University India completed a one month internship at the Christian Mutualities from the 20th of June till 20th of July 2017. This was facilitated and co-organised by India Platform.

The students were hosted by local families and the general the purpose of the internship was to: To be introduced to the Belgian mutual health care system with visits to different health care institutions in Belgium and the Netherlands, including general and super-speciality hospitals, elderly care homes and institutes for mentally disabled persons. The students experienced the complementary services provided by a mutual organisation, like volunteering on a city trip for people with physical disabilities.

Each student has a different focus.Arya explored the coverage and OOP in public, not-for-profit and for-profit health insurance, and spent time understanding the principles of mutual organisations.

Swetha identified the role of volunteers in informal and formal healthcare of elderly, children and disabled individuals, and explored the new initiative of Christian Mutualities on social entrepreneurship and the elderly

Monisha spent time understanding the preventive programs of cervical cancer in Belgium and the Netherlands and estimated and compared OOP, the Direct cost incurred due to cervical cancer in Belgium and the Netherlands she also explored the maintenance of cancer registries in Belgium

MPH Students on Internships in Belgium, France & Netherlands Health Systems.

Three of Master of Public Health (MPH) Students from Department of Public Health, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University are visiting Belgium, France & Netherlands for their MPH internships in June & July 2017. Ms. Arya K Sundara, Ms. Swetha Ann Varghese and Dr Monisha Venkatachala, from Department of Public Health got this opportunity of getting European exposure in the field of public health where they participate in and deliver the learning objectives on health system studies, health insurance and other social security schemes, care of elderly and cost analysis for cervical cancer management. Department of Public Health has Memorandum of Understanding with Christelijke Mutualiteit, a leading social security agency in European Union and this internships are being provided under scholarships through this MoU. Dr. Sudeep Kumar, Head of the Division said this batch of MPH interns would contribute and learn concurrently on global health issues and between India & Europe. Mrs. Nancy Fobe & Mr. Geert Basyn from CM are focal points in Europe for this internships.

This is the second global achievement of Department of Public Health further to its MoU with University of Minnesota, School of Public Health for student exchange programme. The Vice Chancellor, Senior Director – International Initiatives, Registrar, Director (R & D) of Nitte University, Dean of KSHEMA & Head of the Department of Public Health have congratulated this team on this global health exposure.

Glimpses of the Follow-up Health Care Ventures Visit, jointly organised by India Platform and Christian Mutuality, from the 31st of March till the 9th of April. The participants visited a range of different hospitals and colleges in Bangalore and Mangalore and ended with a conference on Universal Health Care Coverage at NITTE University, Mangalore. Starting from January 2015, Dwengo in partnership with Bhumi of India has launched UDAVI (உயர்வு தரும் விஞ்ஞானம் : Upliftment through Science), an initiative to establish a sustainable robot-building community for disadvantaged children in Chennai, India. The aims of UDAVI are to stimulate creativity, critical thinking and problem solving abilities for under-privileged children thereby also motivating them to take up careers in STEM fields. The project commenced in January with a 3 week program of training volunteers and the first batch of children through direct interaction with Dwengo members.

The India Platform held its annual Indian Welcome Evening on the 8th of December 2016. Living in an alien culture is not always easy, and during this evening experiences were exchanged, new friendships built, and thoughts were developed about how to bring Europe and India closer together. This year the theme was a development of our 2014 event Ceci n'est pas l'Inde - This is not India.
