Three researchers join Paulo de Assis's ERC project.

Orpheus Instituut is delighted to welcome three researchers who will support Paulo de Assis in his ERC Advanced Grant project Posthuman Music: Creative Practices after AI and Blockchain. The researchers bring complementary artistic and scholarly perspectives to a project that investigates how emerging technologies are transforming musical creativity, authorship and agency.

Posthuman Music addresses the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies on contemporary musical practices with special emphasis on the emergence of more-than-human creative agencies. The project explores the evolving concept of 'posthuman music' as a forward-looking perspective that brings together human and non-human creative agents. The following researchers will contribute to groundbreaking research in composition, sound art, music philosophy, digital media studies, and contemporary philosophy (Posthumanism, Assemblage Theory) with potential implications for the future of music creation, distribution, and understanding.

The REMA Early Music Summit returns! 🎶

From 24 to 27 November 2026, REMA - EEMN, the European Early Music Network, is organising the third edition of the European Early Music Summit in Bruges and Ghent, in partnership with Concertgebouw Brugge, Orpheus Institute and Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent.

Under the tagline "What we stand for", this edition invites the sector to return to what truly matters: what unites it, and what its values express to the world and about the world.

Conceived as a laboratory of ideas, the programme combines panels and discussions, continuous thematic streams on research, education, repertoire and performance practice, project pitches, masterclasses and participatory workshops, with the 2026 REMA Awards ceremony as its highlight.

Music and its elements run throughout the work of Michel Serres (1930-2019). Music is the summation of all the arts. It precedes language and science; it calls into question received modes of knowledge. Like all forms of life, music receives, stores, processes and emits information.

This symposium is an opportunity to consider the vital place of these threads through Serres’ work, and the implications and potential of his ideas in the creation and understanding of music and sound.

Time for a new ECHO issue!

This issue collects work from and responding to the "Electronic Lutherie" symposium held at Orpheus Instituut in January 2026 and co-convened with Catalyst Institute for Arts and Technology Berlin. This event was organised around three central questions: how do instrument designers understand the creative potentials of their work, how explicitly are their intentions reflected in what they create, and what agencies and autonomies emerge when musicians actually play these tools?

ECHO is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal that exists to share creative work and understanding in the common space at the intersection of music, thought and technology.

From August to December 2026, she will be doing a traineeship at Orpheus Instituut, where she will combine her interests in music, dramaturgy and the history of opera by contributing to our research, communications and events.

Under the guidance of Bruno Forment, Delphine will delve into a largely unexplored collection of digitised set-design models from Grenoble. She will be working with the research clusters Resounding Libraries and Declassifying the Classics.

We are pleased to welcome Julija Bagdonavičiūtė as a visiting researcher.
During her residency, Julija Bagdonavičiūtė will develop her research on post-instrumentality, focusing on the piano as a dynamic and relational entity rather than a fixed sound-producing object. Drawing on posthumanist perspectives, her project investigates how the materiality of the instrument shapes creative expression and reconfigures the relationship between performer and instrument.
