Inspiring successful futures since 1967 Antwerp International School (AIS) founded in 1967 is a non-profit international day school in Antwerp, Belgium.

The school has over 400 student from 30 nationalities. AIS was the first school in the world to be accredited four times by CIS. It has also been fully accredited by NEASC for over 20 years.

Looking back to 1997 when Antwerp International School hit the major milestone of celebrating 30 incredible years! From small beginnings in Kasteel Moretus to a thriving global community, so many memories have been made on these grounds by our amazing alumni, our Legends. 💙

Now, as we look back on where it all started, we’re gearing up for an even bigger milestone—celebrating 60 years of AIS! 🥳🎉

We can’t wait to welcome back generations of Legends to mark the occasion in true AIS style with our upcoming Alumni Prom and International Day. It’s going to be an unforgettable reunion full of dancing, catching up with old friends and celebrating the rich international community that makes our school unique. 🌍💃🕺

Bonjour!

Learning languages has always been a core part of life in Middle and High School at AIS, with students tackling both Dutch and French to connect with the local culture and beyond. 🌍

Back in 2004, Grade 9 student Chelsea (from Mme Pison’s French 1 class) entered a multiple-choice trivia contest in the back of Bonjour magazine about France. Out of all the entries, Chelsea was selected by Mary Glasgow Publishing as the winner, taking home a CD by French pop star Priscilla! 🎶🏆

Whether you were mastering your French conjugaisons with Mme Pison or Mr Elst, practising spreekwoorden in Dutch with Mevrouw Gommeren or struggling with der, die, das in Frau Werkers’ German class, language lessons always brought their fair share of memorable moments. 💬✨

In 2001, Grade 10 set off for an unforgettable four-day sailing adventure in Stavoren, The Netherlands! 🌊

Divided across three ships, Vriendentrouw, Dy Abt Fan Starum and The Pink Boat (aka the "veggie" boat), the students experienced sunny, hot days as well as cold, rainy stretches (and a fair bit of seasickness on deck!). The trip was packed with memories. Highlights included exploring Makkum, cycling around Terschelling, hitting the subtropical pool, bowling and even a slightly smoke-filled cooking incident in the cabins courtesy of Stacey and Caroline! 😂🍳

Of course, no AIS trip ends without a bit of chaos, like realising two students were missing right as the bus was about to leave, making everyone arrive back in Antwerp two hours late! A huge shoutout to chaperones Ms Flaherty, Ms Biesemans, Mr Cox, Ms Tylke and Mr Nijsen for steering the ships and keeping the crew in line. 💙

After decades of dedicated service, 1999 marked the retirement of Mr De Mol. Having grown alongside AIS, he left an unforgettable mark on our community. He was a firm believer in internationalism and was instrumental in implementing the Diploma programme at the school. 💙

Mr De Mol wore many hats. First and foremost, he was a Principal to thousands of students. He also coached the basketball and football teams and, as a polyglot himself, he helped build the language programme at AIS. His role evolved over the years, but his warmth and support for students and staff never faded.

At his farewell assembly in May 1999, Grade 10 students gifted him a T-shirt reading: "There is life after AIS – Enjoy It!" René enjoyed travelling, reading up on Belgian politics and World War II, and listening to music ranging from classical to jazz.

It is with fond memories and heavy hearts that we also remember Mr De Mol’s passing in November 2023. His positive influence, wisdom and kindness touched generations of AIS students and faculty, leaving a legacy that will forever remain a cornerstone of Antwerp International School. ✨

In October 2002 six of our talented AIS boys - Clay, Christopher, Matthew, Eivind, Kyo and Iwan - travelled to Paris to represent the school as members of the International Boys’ Choir! Led by their brilliant director, Mrs Dianne Pritchett, the group took the Thalys train over to France for intense rehearsals and a special gala concert at The American School of Paris. 🎵🎤

They performed alongside nearly 100 other boys from across Europe, China and England. From card games on the train to taking the stage for a grand finale, it was a trip to remember! Bravissimi to these musical Legends! 👏

Another tradition at AIS: the annual Grade 11 English Language and Literature trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. For a few days, the birth city of William Shakespeare became the ultimate classroom, filled with morning lectures, lively discussions and evenings spent at the theatre. It was always a treat watching our casually dressed 11th graders transform into total glamour for the evening shows! 🎭

In 1998, our students took in classics like The Tempest, Measure For Measure, and The Merchant of Venice, along with Bartholomew Fair and a modern-set Bad Weather. Of course, it wasn't all hard study; there was plenty of free time spent strolling through the charming town, exploring Anne Hathaway’s cottage and visiting Shakespeare’s grave.

A huge shoutout to the legendary chaperones who kept everyone in check: Mr Gardner, Ms Sant, Mr Cox, Mr Wade and Ms Goetschalckx! 💙

And because no AIS trip was ever without a bit of drama... who could forget the ride home? The bus had a bit of an unexpected run-in with a 25-metre lorry! Thankfully, everyone made it out completely unscathed, with an unforgettable story to tell. 🚛

Who remembers the moment when our Swedish students brought a touch of home to school, celebrating Santa Lucia? They lit up the corridors—quite literally!—wearing traditional glowing crowns of light and spreading pure festive warmth. 🕯️

It’s moments like these that made (and make) AIS so special. Even three decades on, this memory captures the heart of who we are: a caring, internationally minded community where every culture is embraced and every learner is seen. 💙

Let’s throw back to 1995, when the ultimate lunchtime elective at Antwerp International School was Computer Keyboarding and Word Processing! 💻💾 Forget scrolling and swiping. Students signed up to learn the elite skill of proper touch typing. ⌨️

Once they proved they were confident typers and could type so many words-per-minute, they were granted access to the holy grail of 90s tech: Microsoft 4.0. Just imagine the excitement of formatting your very first essay without a typewriter! 📄✨

A yearly tradition: the Grade 10 Geo trip to Montreux. Leading the expedition was none other than Mr Derek Smith, Geography teacher, football fan, proud Newcastle native and guide extraordinaire. Was he really? 🤔Mr Smith promised the class a nice, breezy one hour walk to check out the area. Fast forward seven hours later and the group found themselves hopelessly stranded and having to hitchhike in the back of a truck back to their hotel. 🚚🎒

Colour photography made its grand entrance to the Arts pages of the yearbook. The first duo to feature in full colour was the handsome Captain Von Trapp and his Maria in the unforgettable production of The Sound of Music. Edelweiss, So Long Farewell and My Favourite Things sounded through the old gym, which doubled up as a theatre. This magical production was brought to life by the talented and legendary Drama teacher, Mr Nelson Monteith, who even managed to convince a good portion of the faculty to become nuns for a day! Mr Monteith touched so many lives at AIS. He had the rare gift of encouraging young people to believe in themselves and explore their creative sides. He did this with immense kindness, endless patience and just a little bit of that Nelson drama 🥰
