Inspiring successful futures since 1967 Antwerp International School (AIS) founded in 1967 is a non-profit international day school in Antwerp, Belgium.

The school has over 400 student from 30 nationalities. AIS was the first school in the world to be accredited four times by CIS. It has also been fully accredited by NEASC for over 20 years.

Who remembers the moment when our Swedish students brought a touch of home to school, celebrating Santa Lucia? They lit up the corridors—quite literally!—wearing traditional glowing crowns of light and spreading pure festive warmth. 🕯️

It’s moments like these that made (and make) AIS so special. Even three decades on, this memory captures the heart of who we are: a caring, internationally minded community where every culture is embraced and every learner is seen. 💙

Let’s throw back to 1995, when the ultimate lunchtime elective at Antwerp International School was Computer Keyboarding and Word Processing! 💻💾 Forget scrolling and swiping. Students signed up to learn the elite skill of proper touch typing. ⌨️

Once they proved they were confident typers and could type so many words-per-minute, they were granted access to the holy grail of 90s tech: Microsoft 4.0. Just imagine the excitement of formatting your very first essay without a typewriter! 📄✨

A yearly tradition: the Grade 10 Geo trip to Montreux. Leading the expedition was none other than Mr Derek Smith, Geography teacher, football fan, proud Newcastle native and guide extraordinaire. Was he really? 🤔Mr Smith promised the class a nice, breezy one hour walk to check out the area. Fast forward seven hours later and the group found themselves hopelessly stranded and having to hitchhike in the back of a truck back to their hotel. 🚚🎒

Colour photography made its grand entrance to the Arts pages of the yearbook. The first duo to feature in full colour was the handsome Captain Von Trapp and his Maria in the unforgettable production of The Sound of Music. Edelweiss, So Long Farewell and My Favourite Things sounded through the old gym, which doubled up as a theatre. This magical production was brought to life by the talented and legendary Drama teacher, Mr Nelson Monteith, who even managed to convince a good portion of the faculty to become nuns for a day! Mr Monteith touched so many lives at AIS. He had the rare gift of encouraging young people to believe in themselves and explore their creative sides. He did this with immense kindness, endless patience and just a little bit of that Nelson drama 🥰

If you were a student at Antwerp International School in the 70s, 80s or 90s, chances are your English grammar, essays and love for literature were shaped by the one and only Ms. Geybels. In 1986 she celebrated 15 years at AIS. She was always there for her students, always ready to listen, to advise and to explain the intricacies of English Language and Literature. Once a Griffin, always a Griffin. Back in 1980, AIS was one of the founding members of NECIS (Northwest European Council of International Schools). Our basketball 🏀, volleyball 🏐 and soccer ⚽ players were boarding buses to head across Northwestern Europe, carrying on the tradition of sportsmanship, fierce competition and global friendships. Shout out to all athletes and coaches who wore the white and maroon Griffin uniform with pride. And let’s not forget the parents. Throughout the years Antwerp became renowned for producing the loudest cheers in the bleachers and the best Booster Club toasties.

Today we are looking back to the stage of 1979 when our talented AIS theatre crew brought Lewis Carroll’s Alice Through the Looking Glass to life. 🎭✨
From the incredible hand-made sets to the iconic, vibrant costumes, this production was absolute magic. Whether playing a chess piece, the Mad Hatter or Alice herself, the students transformed the old gym into a wonderland of creativity. Decades may have passed, but the passion for the arts and the legendary stage energy at AIS has never stopped shining! 🌟

We’re talking feather cuts, shags, epic sideburns and centre partings that required a lot of upkeep. 🔥 Combine those iconic hairstyles with the classic school sweaters and you have peak 1975 campus style. Who rocked this exact haircut back in the day? Tag the classmate who had the best '70s style.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of a former colleague, Marja Van der Eyken, who was part of the Antwerp International School community for most of her life.
Marja joined AIS as a teenager and remained a dedicated presence until her retirement a few years ago. She was one of those rare individuals who worked quietly behind the scenes, never seeking attention, yet leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on the daily life and well-being of the entire school community.
She was deeply respected and genuinely loved by colleagues and friends alike. Even after her retirement, her name was always met with warmth and fond memories.
Above all, Marja was a devoted mother who spoke proudly of her family, especially her cherished holidays in Tenerife, where she found so much joy watching her husband and children surf.
She faced her illness with remarkable courage over the years. Her passing is a profound loss to all who knew her.
Marja will be remembered for her unwavering kindness and the quiet strength with which she touched so many lives.
Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
