PhD about behavior change techniques to enhance road safety among motorcycle taxi riders in Dar es Salaam. - UHasselt 27/05/2026

On Tuesday June 2 at 17:00 Katondo Salvatory NAMBIZA will defend his PhD in Transportation Sciences at Hasselt University. His PhD thesis is titled "Applying Behavior Change Techniques to Enhance Traffic Safety among Motorcycle Taxi Riders: A Case Study of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania".

In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, motorcycle taxi riders—known as “bodaboda” riders—play a crucial role in urban mobility and employment. However, they also rank among the most vulnerable road users due to risky riding behaviors, heavy traffic exposure, and challenging working conditions. In his research, Katondo aimed to enhance motorcycle taxi safety. He developed and tested the SAFARI–SPIDER intervention, which employs behavior change techniques tailored to the everyday realities of motorcycle taxi riders, focusing on safer phone use, hazard anticipation, calm riding, and the use of protective gear.

If you wish to attend the defence and/or the reception, please register via the online form by May 29th at the latest. It is also possible to follow the defence online.

Yesterday, our students from the 1st Master’s in Transportation Sciences went on a field trip to Antwerp as part of their courses “Transport Organisation" and "Road Safety Audit” by Prof. Dr An Neven & Prof. Dr Evelien Polders.

In the morning, they visited the Oosterweel site. They were given a presentation on the Oosterweel project and took a guided tour of the various Oosterweel construction sites. In the afternoon, a presentation by the Mobility Department on “Mobility trends and data in the City of Antwerp” was scheduled.

For this fascinating trip, the students and lecturers travelled by train, bus (for the guided tour of the site), tram and on foot, all under a glorious sun. 👍

🌍 Interesting event for Transportation Sciences students!

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global plan to tackle big issues like health, inequality, climate, and education. But progress is slower than it should be?
That’s why EYE4SDGs is hosting a youth-focused workshop in Brussels on Thursday 26th March 2026. Are you passionate about change and working towards a better world? Would you like to co-create advocacy goals with stakeholders doing local and EU spheres?

Here’s what we’ll be doing:

• Sharing key SDG gaps identified in Belgium, Kenya, and Uganda
• Working with young people to turn ideas into practical advocacy and action.
• Launching the Youth Voices Movement, a space for youth collaboration and leadership

If you care about making change, learning more about the SDGs, or connecting with other motivated young people, this space is for you. Please keep your train and bus ticket for travel cost reimbursement.
