“THE ART OF THINKING”
How coding can develop computational thinking in children?
I have often observed that people make mistakes, and the main reason of them making mistakes is lack of understanding of the problem, in hand.
We also say “people learn from there mistakes”, which for me would mean that once they start working on things, and start to understand it better, they learn about the problem. They start seeing the small bits here and there which they ignored earlier.
So, if a person can really work on understanding the problem in hand, and if he can break the big problem into smaller problems, before starting the work, can we minimize mistakes we do in day to day life.
Also, we say “Your life right now is a reflection of your past”.
For me, the meaning of this would be that the attitude and skills what we develop in childhood remains with us in future.
As a teacher, I really would want my students to develop these skills today as this will give them there identity tomorrow. When children develop computational skills, they are able to articulate a problem and think logically. It helps them to break down the issues at hand and predict what may happen in the future. It’s also helping them to explore “cause and effect” and analyse how their actions or the actions of others impact the given situation.
Coding teaches problem-solving skills
Coding is a real-world way to teach mathematical thinking. When students create or debug a program, they practice solving problems.
Why coding is important in secondary years?
Introductory programming classes in schools can help children understand the basics of programming structure, logic, and design. Of course, not all children will become software engineers; however, learning programming may help sharpen their practical and logical thinking skills. This will help our students in what ever field they are, what profession they join and succeed.
There are a lot of possibilities for a child that knows how to code, and the most important skill they acquire along the way is that they learn how to “create their own solutions”. Many would argue that it is hard for children to learn to code, but there are a number of applications and games designed specifically for that. Additionally, learning to code is the same as learning new language skill, especially for the children.
Also, since we are living in a digital age, technology plays a huge role in our daily lives. Smart devices are all around us—at home, school, the office, and so on. Although we use these devices every day, we typically only use them for basic functions, such as text messaging, phone calls, entertainment, music, etc.
When software and hardware designers make devices or apps, they usually add a lot of functions and features that most customers barely use. Mobile technology is developing rapidly, so the cell phones in our hands act as small personal computers with a broad range of tasks. Even TVs and other home appliances have become multifunctional devices.
Did you know that coding is a background for many of these devices? Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of the importance of coding. By teaching people how to create software codes that run devices, they will better understand how these devices actually work. Aside from that, coding classes can help students realize how applications are designed, as well as how the software triggers the device capabilities. That’s why coding should be a compulsory subject for students in the future.
Today’s hi-tech kids learn from the same books I used during my time at school 15 years ago. Our education system promotes rote learning, and this promotes conformism rather than curiosity in children. There is a rote learning that governs our schools.
If we do not introduce Coding in schools, then our children will be at a huge disadvantage and the future would be precarious.
Coding is about much more than teaching technology. It incorporates logic, problem-solving, and creativity in an engaging way for children of all ages. Coding allows students to be creative. If something doesn’t work, students must figure out why and determine how to fix it. Coding is the process of continually making mistakes, learning from them and correcting them. Coding requires creativity and critical thinking – future-ready skills. Best of all, coding allows students to create content, rather than simply consume it – and that’s a must-have skill for functioning in today’s tech-driven world.
