🌍 ISN at : Turning commitments into action for kidney health

What a week at the United Nations General Assembly! The ISN delegation, led by President Marcello Tonelli, brought kidney health into key conversations on NCDs, UHC and stronger health systems.

We kicked off with our ISN–Devex event on integrated NCD care, bringing together leaders from health, development and financing to explore how kidney health can help strengthen health systems.

Throughout the week, ISN also joined the NCD Alliance Multistakeholder Gathering and the World Stroke Organization’s “Reducing the Stroke Burden: Translating the WHA Resolution into Action” event.

Our delegation also met with UN and government representatives from Djibouti, Algeria, Dominican Republic, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, strengthening dialogue on kidney health and opportunities for collaboration.

Across these conversations, one message was clear: kidney health must be part of integrated, sustainable approaches to NCDs and UHC.

The ISN-TTS session on pregnancy in renal transplant recipients brought together experts to address counselling, clinical management, outcomes, and barriers to pregnancy after transplant. The session highlighted the importance of this topic and also explored the perspectives of First Nations women in the Australian and New Zealand kidney health context.

🎬 2022 ISN Community Film Event Winner

“For Some the Wait Never Ends” tells the story of Saad Ahmad Khan, a young man from India living on long-term dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant. His journey brings attention to the uncertainty faced by patients waiting for a transplant and the importance of raising awareness of deceased organ donation.

For 2022 winner Dr. Jeyakumar Meyyappan, the ISN Community Film Event provides a platform for patients to share their experiences and help others better understand the realities of living with kidney disease.

🎥 Your story could inspire the global kidney community next.

The 9th ISN Community Film Event is open for submissions. Share a short film highlighting the experiences of people living with kidney disease, their families, communities, or the healthcare professionals who support them.

🏆 The winning film will be recognized at the 2027 World Congress of Nephrology in Kuala Lumpur, and the winner will receive a travel grant and complimentary congress registration.

🌍 A day of action for kidney health at

The ISN delegation, led by President Marcello Tonelli, joined the World Stroke Organization event exploring how to translate the WHA resolutions on kidney health and stroke into action.

The delegation also met with Youssouf Aden Moussa, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Djibouti to the UN, to discuss advancing kidney health within the NCD and UHC agendas.

Across both engagements, one message stood out: collaboration is essential to turning global commitments into action. 🌎

🌍 A day of important conversations on stronger, more equitable health systems at .

Today in New York, ISN contributed to discussions highlighting the need to move from global commitments to practical action on NCDs and universal health coverage.

At “The Health System Stress Test: Integrated NCD Care for UHC,” convened by ISN and Devex, leaders from health, development, and financing explored how integrated chronic care can strengthen primary care and build more resilient and sustainable health systems — using kidney health as a test of health system readiness.

ISN President Marcello Tonelli also participated in “Why Women Wait Years Longer for a Diagnosis,” a high-level roundtable convened by the Partnership for Women's Wellness and Siemens Healthineers. The discussion addressed delays in detecting and diagnosing NCDs in women, including cardio-kidney-metabolic conditions, and practical actions to improve screening, diagnosis, and access to care.

ISN also met with the Algerian delegation, including Dr. Fourar Djamal, Director General of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Algerian Ministry of Health, to discuss kidney health in Algeria and opportunities to strengthen prevention, early detection and care.

As the global health community looks ahead to the 2027 UN High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, these conversations reinforce the importance of integrated approaches that translate global commitments into better care and health outcomes.
