What happens when you can apply your expertise to a challenge that matters?

Valentin Lemaire has long been interested in AI and emerging technologies. Through his Prince Albert Fund project in San Francisco, he had the opportunity to apply that expertise to climate-related challenges by working on questions at the intersection of technology, energy and sustainability which are increasingly intertwined.

Working with , he helped strengthen the collaboration with the ClimateWorks Foundation and contributed to the development of a grant-making strategy focused on AI and climate. The work explored how AI’s environmental footprint could be reduced while leveraging the technology to support climate action

His work explored questions that are becoming increasingly relevant across the world:
How can data centres minimise their impact on the climate, local water resources and surrounding communities?
What policies and business models are required to support a more sustainable deployment of AI?
How can AI help optimise renewable energy systems and reduce reliance on gas and fossil fuels?

The experience confirmed for Valentin that technological innovation and sustainability do not have to be separate worlds.

Following his PAF project, he joined the San Francisco-based startup Powerline working at the intersection of AI and energy, allowing him to continue building a career that combines his technical expertise with issues he cares about.

Learning by doing, or learning by failing? Turns out, they go hand in hand.

Did you know at least 20% of our recent PAF cohorts didn’t get in on their first try? They were selected only after a second or third application.
That means they used their rejections to grow. They learned, adapted, and tried again.
That’s what a growth mindset really is: courageous action and making mistakes go hand in hand, and that’s exactly where the real learning happens.
We asked PAF alumni: is it learning by doing, or learning by failing? 🎥
Hit play to hear what they said.

🌍 Learning by doing. Leading by experience.

At PAF, we believe young talent develops best when given the chance to step outside their comfort zone: 12 months abroad, a real entrepreneurial challenge, and the freedom to make it their own.

And it works: 9 in 10 laureates from our latest cohort report a high impact on their personal development.

Three PAFfers. Three different challenges. Three leadership skills put into practice:

Anton Jonbloet — Strategic agility
Mylana Cohen — Intercultural communication
Zeno Zobel — Team leadership

Different countries, different projects, one thing in common: they got to build these skills for real.

📅 Curious about PAF? Our annual info session takes place on November 9th.

Application dates and registrations for the info session are now open: princealbertfund.be/candidates

Before summer turns into September plans...
The 2027 application dates are now online and registrations for our info session are open!

Many of us use the last weeks of summer to think about the year ahead.

If levelling up your career and/or switching area through an international assignment is on your list, now is a good time to start exploring the Prince Albert Fund.

Each year, PAF gives young Belgian talent (up to 30 y.o.) the opportunity to spend 12 months abroad developing a business project for a Belgian
company while building leadership, adaptability and international experience along the way.

First week vs. Last week: Which moment defines the journey? ✈️🌍

From the excitement of stepping into the unknown and spotting a self-driving Waymos in San Francisco, to wrapping up a project during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro or building deep connections with local teams... every Prince Albert Fund (PAF) assignment is packed with impactful moments.

Some Alumni thrive on the thrill of fresh beginnings (“everything is new, exciting, and the road is ahead!”), while others value the strong team integration, achievements, and closure at the end (plus zero jet lag 😉).

Are you team First Week 🚀 or team Last Week 🏁?

What professional experience changed not just your skills, but who you became?

We asked our PAF alumni who they became after spending a year abroad, working on an entrepreneurial project far outside their comfort zone. 🌍

More than 600 alumni later, one thing keeps coming back.

You can learn frameworks and skills in a classroom. But accelerated growth often happens when you’re thrown in the deep end, with enough support and guidance to come through it.

Was it leaving the corporate world to start your own thing? Leading a team for the first time? Becoming a working parent? Or maybe your PAF year abroad?
