Euroseeds strongly welcomes the adoption of the EU Regulation on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) by the European Parliament plenary.
This important decision ends almost a decade of legal and political uncertainty and provides long-awaited clarity for plant breeding innovation in Europe.
We would like to sincerely thank rapporteur Jessica Polfjärd, all Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, as well as all stakeholders who have contributed over many years to shaping this complex and important file.
As highlighted by Euroseeds CEO Garlich von Essen, this is a major milestone for European agriculture and a key step forward in supporting innovation, competitiveness and sustainability.
Euroseeds will continue to work with all partners to support the implementation of this framework and ensure it delivers benefits for breeders, farmers and the wider agri-food sector.

🌱 A significant milestone for European agriculture!
Yesterday, the European Parliament's COMENVI Committee voted in favour of the compromise text on plants obtained through certain New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).
This brings Europe one step closer to a modern, science-based framework that can help farmers grow crops that are more resilient, sustainable, and better adapted to future challenges.
Innovation in plant breeding can support:
✅ Climate adaptation
✅ Food security
✅ Sustainable use of resources
✅ Agricultural competitiveness
With the final plenary vote approaching, we hope to see continued support for this important legislation.
Europe's farmers and breeders need access to the tools that will help them meet tomorrow's challenges.

📢🧬🌱🥔How can CRISPR innovation help reducing chemicals in everyday products?
Did you know potato starch is used in many everyday products like soups, sauces, dairy, paper, and cardboard? 🍲 🥛 📄 📦
To make starch suitable for industrial use, it is often chemically modified, requiring large amounts of chemicals.
Now, SolEdits and Lyckeby have developed a new solution using CRISPR technology. By making very precise changes in the potato’s own DNA, they have created a “storage stable starch” potato that no longer needs chemical modification.
What this means in practice:
🌱 At least 5,000 tonnes of chemicals saved each year in Sweden
🌱 Up to 75,000 tonnes across the EU
🌱 Better product quality and shelf life
🌱 Added value for 500 farmers who are part of the Lyckeby Group
The potatoes have already been tested in field trials since 2017 and could be launched once the EU regulatory process is completed, with a decision expected by the end of 2025.
This is a clear example of how new breeding technologies can help make food production more efficient and resource-conscious ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/mrrpeet9

Fun ! 🎉
Did you know that every new crop variety begins with biodiversity? 🌱🧬
The genetic diversity found in plants around the world provides breeders with valuable traits that can help crops cope with challenges such as drought, extreme temperatures, pests, and diseases.
By combining this natural diversity with modern tools like genomics and artificial intelligence, plant breeders can identify promising traits more quickly and develop crops that are better prepared for tomorrow’s challenges.
🌾 Biodiversity is important for nature as it also is a key ingredient for future food security ⬇️ https://tinyurl.com/h36tr2w9

🚫 Child labour is unacceptable and has no place in the seed sector.
The European seed sector is committed to promoting safe, fair and lawful working conditions throughout the entire seed value chain. In line with EU legislation and ILO Convention 138, Euroseeds and its members support efforts to prevent and eliminate child labour wherever it occurs.
Together, we can help build a more responsible and sustainable future for agriculture. 🌱🤝📜

Plant breeding innovation is used to respond to consumers' needs. 🌱🛒🛍️
For example by breeding varieties suitable for people with food allergies and intolerance. 🤧
