Geospatial data is easy to produce and can be hard to use. The layers get built, the dashboard gets shared, and the decision still gets taken the way it was always going to be taken. Getting from a good map to a different outcome is the actual work.

This roundtable takes three projects from the City Living Lab at the University of Caxias do Sul, AgroCity, GeoIA and GaIA, and uses them to show how urban agriculture, geospatial AI and citizen engagement combine into something local. Inclusive climate action, better local decisions, and value that communities and policymakers can actually see.

Ana Cristina Fachinelli Bertolini, who heads the lab, moderates. She is joined by Rafael L. Perini, Professor and Researcher at the university and a founding member of the lab, Cíntia Paese Giacomello, Professor and Researcher in geoanalysis for sustainability, Suane Moschen, Professor of Management and a researcher at the lab, Alexandre Pereira Santos, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Geosciences and Geoinformation at the University of Bonn, Charlotta Mirbach, Climate Adaptation Researcher and Data Scientist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and Mateus Panizzon, Professor and Researcher in anticipatory governance.

A Brazilian and European line up on the same problem from two very different contexts, which is usually where the disagreement gets interesting. If you have ever built the map and then watched the decision go the other way, you will have something to add here.

Thirty-three, and that number has moved almost every week since registration opened.

Behind it are Living Labbers booking trains, wrangling a travel budget, working out who is covering the office. Some are sending a whole team. Some are one person, because the last week of September is when global Living Lab community is in one place.

🌍 One week to go until ENoLL’s session at the Science Summit during UNGA81!

The fashion industry is one of the world’s most resource intensive sectors, with major impacts on climate, water, biodiversity and textile waste. Moving towards circular and regenerative fashion is therefore a global priority requiring systemic action across policy, science, industry and society.

Against this backdrop, ENoLL is pleased to contribute also this year to the Science Summit during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) with:

Living Labs for Circular Regenerative Fashion: Co creating Science Based Systemic Solutions Across the Global North and South

We are honoured to welcome keynote speakers Claudia Giacovelli, Textile Projects Portfolio Lead and Officer in Charge of the Textiles Unit at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), bringing an international environmental policy perspective, and Matteo Ward, Fashion Entrepreneur, Sustainability Advocate and Communicator, bringing the perspective of entrepreneurship and the fashion industry.

They will be joined by Salla Kuuluvainen from Laurea Living Labs through Baltic2Hand Interreg Central Baltic Programme, Barbara Kieslinger from the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) through make a thek, Samia Chelbi from DigiArt Living Lab and BAF, and Silja Kostia from TAMK Living Lab, sharing practical experiences in circular textile value chains, reuse and repair, citizen engagement and community led innovation.

By connecting international policy, scientific expertise, entrepreneurship and local knowledge with real life experimentation, the session will explore how Living Labs can help turn global ambitions into systemic change across the Global North and South.

This is where Living Labs can make a distinctive contribution: connecting global ambitions with local realities through co creation, experimentation and evidence generated in real life settings.

For one day before begins, Brussels becomes a training room for the Living Lab community. The Learning Lab Day 0 brings together experienced trainers in Living Lab methodologies, expert ENoLL Members, partners from international projects setting up Living Labs, students, researchers and practitioners from the local ecosystem. It is a chance to build your skills, learn from real cases and connect with people doing the same work elsewhere. Here is what you can expect:

📍 29 September | Brussels
A full day of engaging lectures, real-life case studies, panel discussions and hands-on exercises. The day runs in two parallel tracks, so that everyone learns at the level that suits them best, and nine trainers will take you through it.

Basic Track | Living Lab Fundamentals and First Steps

For newcomers and for those exploring, setting up or opening a Living Lab. Marta De Los Rios White and Isabelle Couture (ENoLL) open the day, and then:
📘 Understand what a Living Lab is, and what it is not, with Isabelle Couture and Romane Caparros (ENoLL)
🧩 Design the foundations of your own Living Lab, from purpose and stakeholders to your first activities, with Isabelle Couture and Romane Caparros
🎨 Build equitable citizen participation through creativity and everyday innovation with Clara Collett (KWMC, Bristol Living Lab)
📊 Connect Living Lab values to visible change, including Key Value Indicators, with Marta Martorell Camps (i2CAT, Colaboratoris Catalunya)

Intermediate Track | Impact, Inclusion and Responsible Experimentation

For practitioners already setting up, running or contributing to a Living Lab who want to deepen their practice:

Meet one of our oldest Adherent Member who has been part of this community since 2008.

La Fabrique du Futur, "The Factory of the Future", is a small Living Lab in France with around 40 members and no physical space of its own. Its founder, Eric Seulliet, says they are "more in the promotion of the Living Lab spirit", and that spirit has travelled a long way. They helped start France Living Labs, the Francophone Living Labs network linking France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, and new labs in Normandy and on Reunion Island.

What we love about Eric's story is how simple the starting point was. He noticed that people who loved technology and people who cared about ecology rarely talked to each other, and decided a Living Lab could be the place where they did. Ask him what a Living Lab is and he will tell you it is an open ecosystem with people at the centre, and that "user" is too small a word for the citizen, worker, student or neighbour who sits there.

Today he is working on Distributed Living Labs, connecting labs around the world around one shared challenge, and on a participatory way of doing foresight he calls Foresight of the Present.

For one week, will become a meeting point for the international Living Lab community, as Living Labbers from across the world come together for the annual OpenLivingLab Days . It is a chance to reconnect, meet new people, exchange experiences and ideas and build partnerships. Here is what you can expect:

We kick off with a dedicated Policy Event at the Committee of the Regions, bringing together Living Lab practitioners and EU representatives to discuss how Living Labs can further contribute under future funding programmes to address key societal challenges.

📍 30 September – 1 October | Antwerp

officially kicks off in , Belgium’s innovation powerhouse! Across two days, there will be plenty of ways to learn, exchange and connect:

Wondering what four days at OLLD26 actually looks like? Here's the shape of it.

It starts in Brussels on 29 September with a Policy Event bringing together EU institutions and the Living Lab community, running alongside Learning Lab Day 0 for anyone new to Living Labs. Then the whole conference moves to Antwerp for 30 September and 1 October, with panel sessions, research presentations, hands-on workshops, garden talks and networking events packed into the "A Room With A Zoo" venue. The last day, 2 October, is dedicated to field visits across Belgian Living Labs, so you get to see the theory in practice before you head home.

Four days, two cities, and honestly, more good sessions than you'll be able to fit in.

Five weeks to go. If OLLD26 has been sitting on your list as a someday thing, this should be the point where it stops being one.

Every year someone tells us afterwards that they nearly didn't come. The travel, the fee, two days away from a project that couldn't spare them. Usually we hear about it too late to help.

So it's worth knowing what's actually on the ticket page. Members and Non-Members. A One-Day ticket if your week won't stretch further. A Presenters and Organisers rate if you're running a session. Rates for students and for startups. Tickets for colleagues joining from low and middle income countries, based on where your institution sits in the World Bank's classification. Group bookings for five or more from the same organisation.

Two things could get missed at checkout. The Social and Networking Dinner and the Networking Poster Session are booked separately, they aren't part of the base ticket. And posters need to be submitted to [email protected] before 1 September, so that one is a next-week job.

Before OLLD26 properly begins, there's a whole day in Brussels worth knowing about.

Policy Event, on 29 September, splits into two parallel tracks. If policy is your world, the Policy Event brings the European Committee of the Regions and the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia together with the Living Lab community for a Policy Dialogue on European priorities, followed by an experiential afternoon session on Living Lab methodologies actually in action.

If you're newer to Living Labs, or want to go deeper into the fundamentals, Learning Lab Day 0 runs the same day at the ENoLL Office, with Basic and Intermediate tracks so you can pick the level that fits.

It's a genuinely useful way to arrive at the main conference already warmed up and connected to the right people.

Picture a Living Lab practitioner who reads English perfectly well on paper but finds a training delivered entirely in English, week after week, quietly exhausting by the third session.

We think about that person a lot, because plenty of skilled practitioners in our community are not first-language English speakers, and it is easy to assume a course like this caters more to the fluent majority.

The Virtual Learning Lab now runs in two tracks, and one of them was built with exactly that person in mind. Every lesson on the Self-Guided Track carries AI-generated subtitles in English, French, Spanish and Italian.

We want to be straight about the difference, because it is a real one. The Live Track runs in English, live with the trainer, the weekly premiere and the Q&A straight after it. The Self-Guided Track has no live component at all, so lessons open one after another as you finish each one, and you can read the subtitles at your own pace, in your own language.

Which means the choice between the two tracks is not only about your diary. If English is not your first language, that is a genuine reason to look at the Self-Guided Track first.

One honest note: the self-assessment that will grant you the Certificate of Competence is offered in English, so it is worth knowing that going in.
