🌍 What if growth had limits?

In his talk, Alexandre Helson reminds us of a simple but uncomfortable truth: infinite growth in a finite world isn’t sustainable. Through the lens of the doughnut model, he highlights how we’ve already moved beyond the safe and just space for humanity, with 7 out of 9 planetary boundaries crossed.

And yet, millions of social needs remain unmet.
A powerful reminder that the challenge isn’t just environmental, it’s also deeply human. Rethinking growth means finding a balance where both people and the planet can thrive.

🌿 What if slowing down was actually the way forward?

In his talk, Alexandre Helson invites us to rethink progress in a world driven by speed and constant acceleration. What if the fastest path to a post-carbon future wasn’t about doing more, but about doing things differently?

By reconnecting with a 200-year-old craft and carrying it into the future, his message is simple yet powerful: not to move faster than life, but to move with it.

Because sometimes, the most radical act is to slow down and choose what truly lasts. 🌍

🔄 What if we are not only facing a climate crisis, but also a time crisis?

At TEDxBrussels Countdown 2025, Alexandre Helson invites us to rethink not just how we act, but how fast we move. Once we truly understand the obstacles in front of us, the path toward becoming a regenerative organization becomes clearer and more grounded in daily discipline.

Moving forward doesn’t always mean accelerating. Sometimes, it means slowing down, reconnecting, and choosing to move with life, not ahead of it.

💬 “Behind our electricity bill there is a whole energy system forming a grid, and this grid it is aging, it is crumbling under pressure of increasing demand, extreme climate events, it also must accommodate huge amount of renewable energy. What if one day the grid fails?”

At TEDxBrussels Countdown 2024, Albinas Zananavicius reminded us that investments in new power generation are necessary.

⚖️ However, it is hard to keep a balance between affordability and reliability. Too often, investments come with a bitter price: erosion of public trust.

How do we make the energy transition truly work?

⚡ How can we make our energy systems reliable, while making them affordable and sustainable at the same time?

The challenges of the energy transition are well known, but at TEDxBrussels Countdown 2025, Albinas Zananavicius shared a powerful European success story from Lithuania.

Political decisions, cooperation, improved regulations, technology, and strong public support are key to turning the energy transition into a concrete and achievable project.

🔄 As Europeans we have a choice to encourage a reform to move the energy transition forward. It is not just an idea, it is an actionable plan.

At TEDxBrussels Countdown 2025, Albinas Zananavicius presented the case of Lithuania, one of the European countries leading the energy revolution.

Moving from dependence to independence when it comes to resourcing is crucial, and both politicians and the public should take part in making this transition happen.

“Rethinking what we really need.”
In his talk, Joost Declercq invites us to step back and question our assumptions: how much space, comfort, and resources do we actually need?

From simple solutions like open windows to low-energy alternatives like ceiling fans, his message is clear — sustainability doesn’t always come from doing more, but from doing differently.
Because where efficiency is about doing things right, sufficiency is about doing the right things.

🌡️ What if comfort has quietly shifted… without us noticing?

In his talk, Joost invites us to rethink something we take for granted: the temperature of our homes. Just a few decades ago, 15°C was considered normal. 20°C? A *sick room*.

Today, we heat our spaces to 22–23°C — without ever really questioning it.

So the question is: when did “comfortable” become excessive?

Sometimes, change doesn’t start with big innovations… but with small awareness.

🏯 “What does it really cost to build?”

Joost Declercq reminded us that constructing just one square meter can generate as much CO₂ as a flight from Brussels to New York. A striking way to rethink the impact of every building decision.
His message was clear: a huge part of emissions quite literally passes through our hands. And with that comes responsibility — especially for the next generation of architects, who will shape how (and how much) we build.
Sometimes, it starts simple: asking to design not more… but better.
