The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has joined the European Commission’s Water Resilience Stakeholder Platform, bringing geological expertise into discussions supporting the implementation of the EU Water Resilience Strategy.

Representing EFG at the inaugural meeting in Brussels, Yuliya Zhuk highlighted the importance of strengthening geological expertise and professional capacity across Europe, particularly in areas such as hydrogeology, water management and climate resilience.

Groundwater systems, aquifers, soils and subsurface conditions are fundamental to understanding water availability, managing resources sustainably and building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Through its participation, EFG will contribute to strengthening dialogue between the geological profession and the wider European water community, ensuring that geological and hydrogeological knowledge informs Europe’s water resilience agenda.

🌍 Meet EFG’s Working Group on Natural Hazards

The EFG Working Group on Natural Hazards strengthens the role of geoscience in understanding, assessing, mitigating and communicating natural hazard and disaster risks across Europe.

Its mission is to support a shift from reactive emergency response towards proactive prevention, preparedness and long-term risk reduction. The group addresses geological, climatic and environmental hazards, including earthquakes, landslides, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions, wildfires and coastal hazards, while also considering compound, cascading and interconnected risks.

The Working Group is coordinated by Dr Giulio Iovine, Senior Scientist at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), whose extensive research spans landslide monitoring and modelling, hazard and risk assessment, and risk mitigation.

Joining him in the Working Group are:

• Roberto Álvarez de Sotomayor Matesanz – Spain
• Timotej Verbovšek – Slovenia
• Steve Gruslin – Luxembourg
• Aurelio Melia – Italy
• David Champness – United Kingdom
• Javier Torrijo – Spain

Together, the group will contribute to policy and advocacy, science and innovation, capacity building and professional standards, helping integrate geoscientific knowledge into disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation and resilient development.

- 🌍 EFG at the 16th IAGOD Quadrennial Symposium 2026

From 30 August to 2 September, the 16th IAGOD Quadrennial Symposium brought together the international geoscience community at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) was pleased to contribute to the programme in partnership with its Portuguese member, the Associação Portuguesa de Geólogos (APG), with a particular focus on supporting the next generation of geologists.

🎓 Supporting early-career geologists

EFG, APG and IAGOD jointly awarded two student grants to support students’ participation in the symposium, helping them access international scientific exchange, networking opportunities and the wider professional community. Congratulations to Alina Yakovenko and Fereshteh Khammar for the award. The award of these two grants has also been made possible thanks to the support of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

The programme also featured an Early Career Session, with Libby Sharman and Julien Feneyrol (Société Géologique de France) joining as mentors. They shared insights from their professional journeys and practical advice with a highly engaged young audience, followed by a lively Q&A and opportunities for networking and future collaboration.

💻 Professional development and digital tools

EFG and APG also facilitated the organisation of the workshop “From Drillhole to Decision: Seequent Mining Workflow”, delivered by Seequent. The workshop provided participants with an opportunity to explore practical tools and workflows supporting modern geoscience and mining applications.

🌅 Connecting beyond the scientific programme

The Early Career participants also had the opportunity to enjoy a special networking activity at the dome of the Pavilhão Rosa Mota – Super Bock Arena, sponsored by APG and EFG, offering a memorable setting for informal exchanges and new connections.

Through these activities, EFG continues to support professional development, knowledge exchange and networking for the next generation of geologists, while strengthening cooperation across the international geoscience community.

A big thank you to APG and the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD) for the collaboration, to Seequent for the workshop, and to all the students, mentors and participants who contributed to a successful symposium!

⛏️ BOREAS: Advancing more sustainable mining in the Arctic

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to see the BOREAS mining project featured in a news article by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) on EU-Canada cooperation to advance the sustainable supply of raw materials.

As a BOREAS partner, EFG leads the project’s ESG governance and compliance framework, helping integrate environmental, social and governance considerations into the development and deployment of innovative mining technologies.

In the challenging Arctic environment of Greenland, BOREAS is combining autonomous aerial and ground robotics, advanced sensing and a real-time digital twin to improve ore characterisation, identify contamination and support more efficient and environmentally responsible mining operations.

The project demonstrates how research and innovation can contribute to more sustainable, efficient and resilient critical raw materials value chains, while addressing the specific challenges of mining in sensitive Arctic environments.

Explore practical approaches to time series and signal processing in geoscience with MATLAB.

On 30 September, the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG), in collaboration with MathWorks, will host the webinar “Time Series and Signal Processing for Geoscience with MATLAB”, presented by Dr Kostas Leptokaropoulos, Global Academic Manager for Geoscience at MathWorks.

The session will explore practical MATLAB workflows for importing, processing, analysing and visualising time series and signal data across geoscience disciplines, including seismology, geophysics, oceanography, hydrology, climate science and environmental monitoring.

The webinar also reflects the ongoing cooperation between the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and IAMG under the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025, which promotes knowledge exchange, skills development and collaboration across the geoscience community.

The European Federation of Geologists is pleased to announce that it is once again partnering with GeoTHERM, the world's leading expo and congress for geothermal energy. The 2027 edition marks a special milestone, the event's 20th anniversary, and will take place at the Offenburg Exhibition Centre in Germany on 25 and 26 February.

Over the past two decades, GeoTHERM has grown from a specialist trade fair into one of the leading platforms for the geothermal industry.
