As part of the campaign, we are pleased to highlight Mums in Geosciences, a project creating a supportive and visible space for honest conversations about parenthood and careers in the geosciences.

Working in a field-intensive profession while planning for parenthood or raising a family can bring challenges that are often experienced privately. Mums in Geosciences aims to bring these experiences into the open by sharing the voices and journeys of parents at different stages of their careers.

The project welcomes geoscientists planning to become parents, mothers balancing young children with career aspirations, experienced professionals reflecting on their journeys, and those who left the profession and followed new paths. It also invites fathers whose careers have been significantly affected by parenting to contribute their perspectives.

By creating space for shared experiences, Mums in Geosciences helps parents feel seen, heard and connected. The project reminds the geoscience community that no one should have to navigate these challenges alone and that greater visibility can help build more supportive and inclusive workplaces.

How should the future EU Critical Raw Materials Centre support Europe's resilience?

As part of the European Commission's Call for Evidence, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) submitted recommendations highlighting the value of geoscience in strengthening Europe's critical raw materials ecosystem.

EFG emphasises the need for the future Centre to be supported by robust geological knowledge, harmonised data, transparent governance and recognised professional expertise. In particular, the Federation highlights the value of requiring, or strongly encouraging, the use of recognised Competent Persons and internationally accepted reporting standards for mineral projects benefiting from strategic support or investment mechanisms. Existing European frameworks, including the European Geologist (EurGeol) professional title and the Pan-European Reserves and Resources Reporting Standard (PERC Standard), aligned with the CRIRSCO family of reporting standards, provide a strong foundation for this approach.

By ensuring that scientific knowledge underpins strategic planning and investment decisions, the proposed Centre can strengthen Europe's resilience while supporting the responsible and sustainable use of its subsurface resources.
