VUB Kickoff Day Yesterday!

Chinese Language Evening Courses Spring 2022 20/04/2022

Today we celebrate the Chinese language, an official language of the UN. It's spoken by more than 1.2 billion people as a native language and has a history of more than 3000 years,

Impressive as it is with a unique system of characters and tones, Chinese is surprisingly logical on a grammatical level. Find out everything about this beautiful language in our evening courses! New courses start in September 2022.

While some progress has been achieved towards reaching gender equality and improvement of women’s status, gender-based inequalities continue to exist. Among these inequalities, underrepresentation of women and their interests is prominent. As there are consistent political, social and cultural differences between different contexts, definitions and strategies of representing women and their interests vary. Concerning China, on the one hand, the country has received positive remarks for acknowledging women’s issue as a political and social problem which requires state inventions (Molyneux, 1981; Howell, 1996). On the other hand, the Chinese practice of pursuing gender equality is strongly challenged, especially for being structured in a ‘top-down’ way and for its tendency to subordinate gender interests to national priorities. As for Europe, several affirmative actions, such as gender quotas and gender mainstreaming, have been applied in several countries. Criticized rightly that there is no guarantee between the number of women in the public offices and the improvements of women’s substantive representation, these affirmative actions nevertheless have been seen as a positive influence on women’s involvement in politics. At this one-day workshop, researchers specialize in women’s representation in China and Belgium meet to exchange their research findings and reflect on the legacies and challenges in each case.

The workshop is open after registration:

Tea, considered a tasty beverage for many in the West, is considered a type of medicine as well in Chinese Traditional Medicine practice.

To explain this approach to tea drinking, ULB-CI is organising a lecture with experts Dr. ZHOU Jinhong from the Agriculture College of Zhejiang University and Professor LI Chunri from the Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The lecture takes place from 13:00 to 17:00 at Solbosch. More info in the attached document.

At the kick-off the campus of the VUB, we organised a calligraphy contest. After long deliberation, which shows how much calligraphy talent is present at the VUB campus, the result is finally in! Third place goes to Nika SinNichka, on the shared second place are Samuel Appia Ofori Jnr and Laura Bossaer.

But the winner of our competition is Kirsten Schotman! She wins the price of a dinner for two at Ramen Delice restaurant near the VUB campus. Congratulations on your calligraphy skills!
