I haven't been sharing my YouTube videos on facebook recently, but I'm pretty happy with today's one, so here it is 😄

Listening to a Four Tet song, I started coming up with a weird and wonderful way to recreate the lead. Little did I know that the original was simply sampled...

Let's talk about two big philosophical approaches to music composition: the additive and subtractive methods!

Similar to additive synthesis and subtractive synthesis, we can think of composition as a process of either "adding the elements we need at any given moment", or "giving ourselves a lot of raw material to cut away from".

Let me show you how to turn dance into music. 💃

This tool is a wearable MIDI controller that you can use to shape the music using your body and movement. I'll explore the pros and cons in this video, and collaborate with a contemporary dancer to do an improvisational performance called CONTROL. 🌊

Let's create beautiful hesitant layers of sound. Starting from a strong musical motif, we curate the best of randomly generated derivative layers. The overall end-result is nuanced, spatial, hesitant and delicious to the ears. 🫧✨🌿

I couldn't get this song out of my head so I had to make a little video about it!

Let's analyse that viral tech house banger called "ACRAZE feat. Cherish - Do it to it". We'll look at all its elements in the DAW and why its simple elegance works as well as it does!

It's almost Avril 14th, so let's celebrate by learning something from the iconic Aphex Twin piano song.

In this song Aphex twin uses an odd chord shape that I'm not familiar with, so let's explore that! And as a broader lesson, it shows how you can take a piano song, see the abstract chords behind it, and then use those chords as colours for your own musical composition 💙

Here's a tiny (3min) video for a simple concept: let's look at how Bicep raises their "sustain" level at the climax of their track to super-charge their otherwise plucky, wavey synth sound.

I've never been much into guitars, but there is one guitar technique that's incredibly useful for techno: using guitar amps to give grit and character to sounds! In this video I explore how music producers can use guitar amps to give their sounds a strong stylistic push towards punk-ness, and also how the added character in the mid frequencies can help sounds translate better across sound systems.

If you're an electronic music producer, synthetic sounds are your bread and butter. But to give those synthetic sounds life and character, we can use sound colours that come from acoustic instruments and percussion.

And it just so happens, I'm giving away a free sample pack of acoustic percussion recordings that can be the perfect complement to an electronic composer-workflow, adding in nuance and soul to synthetic music.

Are you producing electronic music, and your sounds are a bit lifeless and artificial? Steal my ear candy! I'm giving away a free sample pack of acoustic per...

When you're working on the bass of your song, there's a simple production error that should be easy to avoid - if only I had listened to my own advice from a few weeks ago!
