This week we had the great pleasure of hosting the first virtual networking event with our counterpart in Brussels - Security and Defence Network Brussels.
We connected Bruges, Natolin and Brussels and despite the distance, those present managed to make real connections. This convinced us that networking can be done even online and we are very much looking forward to the next round!

Two of our ESDN members, Edoardo Bombardieri and Arcangelo de Castris published an article for the Institute for a Greater Europe on the EU's military 'strategic autonomy'.
In this article, they analysed the concrete nature of the EU's military 'strategic autonomy' in the changing global environment while keeping an eye on the most recent initiatives meant to enhance the EU's capacity to act as a security provider.

In the last weeks, we witnessed a revival of the debate on the European Union's Strategic Autonomy: the interview of President Macron on 'Le Grand Continent' (https://legrandcontinent.eu/fr/2020/11/16/macron/) has triggered the European Security and Defence Community to explore the possible declinations of the concept, in light of a re-shaped Transatlantic Partnership.
Nonetheless, the discussion on EU's Strategic Autonomy is far from being new; the European Security and Defence Network propose you a stimulating paper by Daniel Fiott, analysing the threefold nature of the concept.

Strategic autonomy. Two familiar words that are yet again in vogue in Europe but which cause confusion and, in some quarters, even alarm. The last time strategic autonomy stirred controversy was in 2003 during the run-up to the Iraq War, but perhaps the most well-known instance followed the Balkan c...
